The gov could also do it in the opposite direction if they wanted. They could say really only have 20k coins to auction.. buy up 30k coins leading into the auction to drive the price up and then get top dollar for the 50k coin auction. Yes, the coins are tracked and what not and people can see what's going on so it's not going to happen.

I feel like when you look at these possibilities, you can see that these people who come in paying market price at auction are cutting themselves short. It's like buying a used car.. as soon as they buy they lose because they can't liquidate them at the current market price. They would most likely actually take a very big haircut.
Have you considered that those bidding at market price at auction aren't looking to unload immediately?

Of course.

A different play the gov could do that isn't traceable would be to buy say 20k coins to drive up the price of BTC a bunch prior to auction to get people to bid say market or even 10-15% below.. unload them the 50k coins at massively inflated prices, then dump the 20k back onto the market.

Would be very suspicious if we actually saw a big run up leading into the auction.

It's a possible play, but I don't see why they care this much over this little. And I'm not even sure it really gains them anything.

Yep. Target, Home Depot, etc... it's pretty common.

Though I'm not sure SWC was even hacked, it's more they are worried about legal problems.

This was quite good and definitely worth watching. It's the best piece of mass market journalism I've seen in terms of explaining the Bitcoin protocol and I would say it's better than "The Rise and Rise of Bitcoin" as a documentary (even though it isn't actually a documentary.)

It was a pleasant surprise considering Super Size Me was such a terrible turd sandwich.

I saw Spurlock's name on it and figured it was surely a turd, but I'll have to take a look.

it's worth watching. I was impressed with how well it was done for mainstream media.

I never made a withdraw from electrum/blockchain to coinbase. But i do know its 1 percent fee to go from coinbase to bank of america. However if you use circle theres no 1 percent fee? But isn't it true circle's bitcoin price is less though meaning the amount you get would be less? Example say just withdraw $2000 worth of btc to bank of america... its 1 percent so $20 fee plus a 15 cent transaction fee. You get $1979.85 ACH transfer in few days. But with circle, you get more or less than $1979.85? I dont understand how circle is free whereas coinbase is 1 percent b/c if its free... wouldn't everyone use circle? I did recall someone saying the price on circle is less so say you have 2k worth of btc to transfer from blockchain... its cheap to go from blockchain to circle to bank acct as oppose to blockchain to coinbase to bank acct?

Someone here mentioned coinbase is closing accts related to gambling but isn't this only true if you go from coinbase directly to gambling site. Thus if you never do that, it doesn't affect you?

I was not charged an ACH fee between coinbase and my bank account. As long as you are one degree of freedom removed from known bitcoin gambling deposit /withdrawal addresses you should be 100% fine.in the early days of coinbase I used to shuttle bitcoins between swc and coinbase regularly without incident ever.

could be tough by today with no connections. im assuming you're in the usa. buy instantly requires a cc. weekly limits on circle = $500 max, coinbase = $100. and the fees are higher. otherwise, localbitcoins.com for local trades and atm's are options depending on where you live.
