Seems like an ok spot to post this as I'm not sure it warrants a thread as yet. I was doing some tax work trying to get the books in order and I came across a simple idea. Here in New Zealand tax year runs April 1-31 March. But the tab divider I had runs Jan-Dec. This doesn't well for our tax year, so I crossed them all out and renamed like so.

Forgive my paint skills and that last divider should be on the bottom not top, so Apr is on the bottom march is on the top. Since you start each year with a clean book you can then file in April and work your way back to the start of the file folder, this makes sure you always have your most recent documents at the top of the folder so you don't have to flip a whole mess of paper each time you want to file something, you simply flip a max of 12 tab dividers. The packaging would have to display the benefit of the dividers to the customer.

As far as I know these tab dividers printed like this don't exist. Pretty sure I could get them printed in china from an alibaba supplier for a few cents. In competition there are of course blank dividers where people can write what they want or print. But people are lazy/don't think about doing that and if you have plastic dividers writing/printing on them can get messy smudging etc.

Problem is this idea is easily copied and most likely if it were any good a stationary company would simply copy my idea and start producing them. I couldn't do much to stop that. Does it seem like a decent idea? Should I risk just taking the idea to a stationary company and hoping they cut me in or buy it outright, here's hoping none of you are from NZ and make stationary haha

The problem with your idea is that companies that do that already exist. Just google custom index tabs. A quick search on google came up with Tabbing Services http://tabbing.co.nz/ They will make them for you. Beyond that how good or bad of an idea it is depends on the size of the market which I have no idea.

Thanks for the input.

Right I realise customisation exists, but ma and pa or even most SME's for that matter aren't likely to bother going and getting customised tabs made (or don't know they can) when they can just get blanks and write on them. But that's the main competition customised tabs and blank tabs. If however they were given the option to buy an already printed tax year tab they might choose that over a blank tab option. It's hard to quantify the market though, maybe I could go the route of printing a bunch then getting accountancy businesses to buy them to give to their smaller clients at the start of tax year.

paratacus,

Sorry the first line in my post was confusing and badly written.

What I meant is that you get a custom tab manufacturer to knock off a bunch of these. You mark them up. You sell them.

The problem though is that if no one is doing it already then the market is likely pretty small and not worth it.

That being said the risks are also pretty low. The cost is not much and if they don't sell you can at least use them yourself and have a much more professional looking product.

He did NOT find any gold, if you can believe that. Apparently he went to a place where he was 100% sure there would be gold, spent about 5 minutes searching and gave up.
