What do coaches gain other than $$$ by teaching ? What do coaches gain other than $$$ by teaching ?

This is one for poker coaches..

Other than the $$'s you get from the student (reducing your variance etc) is there a particular benefit to you as a player when you coach others ?

Is it that your working life is broken up into more varied 'segments' for want of a better word ?

Does it improve your own game and if so how ?

Or is it purely for the $$$

(& no, I don't want to be a coach)

Why do teachers teach? Obviously for the money, but also because there is some enjoyment gained when you can see your students "getting it". Being a professor myself, there is much gratification is teaching/coaching.

I really just enjoy it.

On a more selfish side, it definitely does help your own game as well.

On average, how much does one get paid to coach?

I'm not aware of any studies, so you could probably answer the question best by examining the rates people charge in this forum: http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/16...oach-listings/

usually its how much a coach makes at an hourly rate when playing. So if the coach makes $100/hr playing poker that's usually around what he charges. Sometimes more, sometimes less depending on experience, etc.

So what you are saying is that Cole South should be paying me about 50K an hour to coach me...

Just kidding

Your answer makes perfect sense...sadly, it turns out, I can't afford a coach just yet.

This is it. Some people just like helping people out. Others do it for money.

There's a HUGE sense of satisfaction in giving someone a life-changing skill of the rest of their life. It's eclipses the money for sure.

It also makes you feel good when your student crushes.

It definitely improves my game and forces me to reconsider some of the ways that I think about it since if my explanation/reasoning doesn't make sense, it's going to be pretty obvious to someone else who is observant. I guess a better way to put it would be that it forces me to be more honest with myself, which I like as an ancillary benefit. I also just enjoy doing it and am glad to make some variance free money to help someone else out.

The amount someone charges shouldn't be correlated with their hourly at the tables, it's more a question of supply and demand. AEJones charges something ridiculous like $1500 an hour, I would guess he maybe makes half that and that's probably a generous estimation, but the reason he's able to charge so much is because of the novelty in getting lessons from the one and only AEJones.

I charge a bit more per hour than I make, but if I didn't, I wouldn't have enough time to do other stuff like play and I'd have too many guys wanting coaching. If nobody wanted it then obviously the price would go down.

just to expand on why coaching is good for your game, when you have to convey a concept to someone else in a way they can understand it, it forces you to understand the subject much better yourself. very often i'll find myself knowing exactly what it is i want to tell a student, not being able to verbalize it, taking a few seconds, and then explaining it satisfactorily. next time i have to teach that concept, i'll have feedback from that student on how i explained it, and i will be able to teach it well. next time i come to use that concept at the tables, i'll find that i well and truly understand the concept and can apply it much better than previously, even if i understood the concept on the surface.

it also forces you to examine your own game. if a student asks me for help with tilt control, i'll tell him the various methods i can use to rein in my own tilt problems. i'll realize that i've not actually been employing some of those methods recently, slipping into bad habits, and having to tell someone to do something makes me do that thing myself.

in general, teaching something to someone moves you from 'conscious competence' to 'unconscious competence', where we start off in any new field of learning in 'unconscious uncompetence', i.e. we don't know that we're really bad at something.
