I haven't read the whole thred but what this boils down to is the fact that you lied.
You offered him something then said "actually no, you can't have it now" (the refund)
If you want to learn a lesson about refunds, you do it after giving the guy his money back. It's like saying I offer coaching over skype/MSN but reserve the right to not offer skype after someone has paid and just send them e-mails.
The point is you are deviating away from what you're offering and just lying.
If this is a business then you have to think of the business reputation before a couple of buyins at your current stake. How sad would a NL10 coach look if he refused to refund $30?? Well that's how bad you look right now.
I have no doubt that in years to come, you'll look back on this and realise that you have handled the situation badly. In businnes your integrity is vitally important.
Good luck to you guys on getting your money back. It sadens me to see people with some sort of talent still feel the need to be dishonest and/or steel.
