I guess it depends on your point of view. I'm in favor of as much money going into the prize pool as possible, and I'm happy to see all the new players coming in with their buy-in or reentries or late entries and start play with a chip stack that is much smaller than mine. I look at a prize pool, I see the amount, and I know that around 1/4 of that will be paid to first place. It's nice to know what I'm shooting for.
On the other hand, I can see your point. Not everyone has the time to play a tournament that can last five hours or more. I know that most of the tournament that I play could go as long as 6 hours, and I make sure that I have that time available. But clearly, a lot of players can't or won't commit such a large block of time to one tournament.
It used to be that the biggest sites had enough options to have something for everyone. When I played on Pokerstars they had SNGs for 9 players, but also for 18, 27, 36, 45, 90, 180, and 360 players, as well as tournaments with thousands of players. I could pick whatever fit my schedule.
Post-Black Friday, the sites don't have enough players to make all of those options available. My suggestion would be to time some different tournaments (check when they start and end) so you will have an idea of which tournaments fit your schedule. You should also consider turbo tournaments, since they finish a lot faster than regular tournaments with the same amount of players.
