I was trying to get some clarification on reporting to the irs. If I understand what has been said correctly the IRS wants their cut of any money I make even if it's illegal, but they want me to lie about how I made it?
I honestly thought you were trolling, but re-reading your post I guess I believe you that they were actual questions you wanted answered.
So I will try to re-answer your questions.
(1) No, you don't have to say where you won the poker/gambling monies. They don't know if its at a casino, online, home game. Only if you get audited I guess would they find out... but even if you were it doesn't matter. So no, your not lying at any point.
(2) your not doing anything illegal by playing poker online. It has never been illegal for the player. Therefore, in the eyes of the IRS it is 100% legit. So there is no reason to lie.
(3) The crack analogy was off b/c in that analogy you are doing something illegal. However, the point was that EVEN IF it is illegal the IRS wants their cut, they don't care. I honestly have no idea how you would file your taxes if you were a crack dealer, and I'm not particular interested in knowing how. The point is that the IRS wants their $$$ no matter what and its better to break just one law (selling crack) then to break two (tax evasion). But this doesn't apply to poker because your not breaking any laws (unless your not paying your taxes).
Cliffs: Your not doing anything illegal, and it doesn't matter if it came from an offshore site or from a live casino, its all the same to the IRS .. so no, you should NEVER lie to the IRS.
