It's hard for me dynamically assigned stats to my opponents in my brain when they are just a number and people come and go pretty quickly.
Notes help tremendously. When you make note(s) on a player, it appears next to their number and when they leave and a new player comes, the new player at that number has no note and they also have a (+) next to their number for a few minutes that indicates they are new.
I mean if you pay very close attention, you can discover the extreme outliers (eg nits and maniacs). You can also notice who is a calling station, and who you can bluff against. You just gotta put that info in the notes. You obviously never get too detailed, such as "3.7 3Bet %" like in HUD, but I pick up on just enough info.
Also, with limited info, I tend to play what i consider, imo, to be "optimal poker" for each stake. It becomes less of "is player 1 bluff raising me here?" And more of "most players at this stake have a hand that beats me when they raise here, so fold." I then keep an eye on that player to see if maybe they are just a cook, and Then things may change next time.
Much harder than playing online with a HUD, but the upside of course is that sites with no HUD and a table-max such as Bovada attract fishier players.
