A couple hands before the last break Antonio was asking the table how many more levels were left, as if he was tired of playing and didn't want to be there. Then he comes back and punts off his stack a short while later. Not saying it's 100% causal, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was tired and not totally focused. Psychology and mood can affect decision making, even for guys with a wealth of experience. For example, I'm not sure Ivey runs that bluff yesterday if he doesn't lose that K8 hand shortly before.

Too much luck required to win this thing more than being good. Not sure we ever see a major pro win this again

No, Antonio had just over 2 million before the hand started (40bb).

We for sure will. In the last 15 years we've seen Mike Matusow, Allen Cunningham, Phil Ivey, Michael Mizrachi, and JC Tran make the final table, with Scotty Nguyen, Carlos Mortensen, and Daniel Negreanu also finishing in the top 12. Sooner or later a big name will get down there and run hot at the right time.

Still too early to sweat, but Cada in the final 9 would be fun for the chance of a repeat champ, which hasn't seemed realistic since Raymer in 2005 or maybe Eastgate in 2009.

My mistake

I only thought I saw on the screen it said 500k

Maybe they got 1.5m in pre and the 1/2m was on the flop

But I could have it all wrong - just what I thought I saw

He almost busted much earlier today. He was all in with KK against AQ, and after an ace hit the flop, he hit his two-outer on the turn.

I think Poker Masters will eventually dethrone the WSOP as being the most prestigious championship. It’s not as tacky as the WSOP has become and has a solid diverse format. It’ll be like the PGA Masters. With fields this large, it’s tough for big name pros to justify playing for 3-5 days only to cash a relatively small amount compared to what they could have grounded out in their regular games. Obviously, binking first would be worth it but, as mentioned, luck is too much of a factor now that the field is so big.

Antonio's bustout hand per WSOP.com (cards do not show up via cut and paste -- Antonio had KJo and Bas had 44):

Quote:
Antonio Esfandiari opened to 115,000 in the hijack and Bas De Laat flat-called on the button. The two players went heads-up to a flop of . Esfandiari led out for 135,000 and De Laat raised to 345,000. Esfandiari called to see the on the turn.

Esfandiari checked this time and De Laat slid in a bet of 415,000. Esfandiari thought for a minute and moved all in for around 1,500,000. De Laat instantly called and Esfandiari got the bad news.

De Laat tabled for a set of fours and Esfandiari was drawing dead with . The chips were verified and it was confirmed that De Laat had Esfandiari covered. The cameras followed him out the door as 'The Magician' saw his 2018 Main Event hopes come to an end.

So AJ was beating Antonio [?]

Seems like he played that so he would always be called when he was losing and folded to when he was winning
