The storyline in one of the last seasons of Sopranos (S6 part 1 iirc) focusing in on Tony's gambling problems I also thought was excellent. Also, the loan-sharking storyline in s2 or 3 w/ the guy who played T-1000 in T2, a friend of Tony's in the show who got in way over his head playing in one of Tony's private poker games, was also very interesting and well-done.

Winner Take All (1975) stars Shirley Jones as an ordinary housewife who gambles on everything. Not as good as The Hustler, California Split, The Gambler, but a pretty solid degen movie that I didn't mentioned elsewhere in the thread. Free for your voyeuristic viewing pleasure on youtube. Watching it again now.

Watched Hard Eight a while ago because it was mentioned in this thread. It's the first film by Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood) and has Samuel L Jackson, Gwnyenth Paltrow, and John C Reilly. Thought it was excellent.

I believe it's an indie film, which means low budget. So you don't get the best actors I'm sure, but the story line is pretty decent.

I feel the same but mostly about the actor and not the character he played in the movie. It seems the greatest actors almost always have personal demons and can portray them in their roles. PSH was one of the best.

Thanks guys for the link to owning mahowney, watched it last nt & yeah gotta say 1 off the best for gambling addiction. It pulls no punches dosen't glamorize the games or story, his wife is played to perfection to. And ofc the slimey casino manager is so true that he only cares about getting them back to play lol.

I believe this is on cable ON DEMAND. I got it on Comcast(xfinity) but I believe it's also on Verizon Fios, dish network and cox.
