I really don't understand why some players are staunchly opposed to playing 10 handed cash games over 9 handed. It makes sense from a poker room standpoint since 10 tables of 9 generates more rake then 9 tables of 10. From a players perspective I prefer 10 handed over 9 as in a live game it takes longer for the game to break and the game lags less if multiple people stand up. Thoughts?

I agree with you, if it is 9 handed and you get 2 walkers and someone quits then the table starts breaking.

I don't understand why some players are so opposed to playing 4 to 6 handed cash games.

+1. especially since the casinos will do reduced rake and the games are going to be much faster. also you can iso the fish more, etc, etc.

so sad that they don't spread 6m cash games around here

I truly fail to comprehend why players refuse to support heads up cash games

If only it was more profitable for the casino to spread shorthanded games.

IME (which is longer than I'd like to admit) the usual player resistance is around short handed games. I can't recall ever hearing anyone say "I'm not playing because it's 10 handed instead of 9 handed".

counterpoint:

because HU > 6max > 9handed > 10handed
because more fun > less fun

9 handed is physically more comfortable, and the game gets more hands per hour, and so is more fun. Also, the shorter the game, the looser the warranted play, so the less the handicap faced by gambling tourists.

The difference in game breaking is trivial. If 3 people are walking off a 10 handed game, or 3 people are walking off a 9 handed game, you'll get the same amount of bitching, because the people who bitch, bitch.

In fact, a 9 handed game with 1 person waiting for a seat is less likely to break than a 10 handed game with no one waiting. 9 handed loses 3 players with one waiting, they have 2 open seats. 10 handed game loses 3 players, they have 3 open seats.

10 handed game with 3 open is more likely to break than a 9 handed game with 2 open. Live players are funny like that.

There's a reason why the A, B, C and MGM have switched to 9 handed. V needs to make the switch, too. I'm surprised the manager there hasn't been fired for making such an obvious error, though they do so many other things well there maybe he's got leeway. Switching to 9 handed is probably about an immediate 10% boost in revenue, and a long run boost of more because playing in your room is more comfortable and fun.

I don't know of too many businesses willing to put up with management passing on that much of an easy boost.

I fixed the mistake in your first paragraph in bold. Also is one of the reasons 4 to 6 handed is so much better to play live than 9 handed. I love it when tables get short and we can keep the game going.

In Tunica the games usually break when they get 6 handed.

I believe most casinos have 10 handed tournaments but I think the Venetian is one a few places that allow 10 handed cash games (with exception to 1 person waiting lists with only 1 table going)

But as far as number of players at a table:
2 - heads up is fine
3 and 4 - this is an awful # of players for a game and I have no idea why poker stars offers 4max games.
5 and 6 - work well especially with aggressive players but add a nitbox or 2 and things start to suck
7 - weird amount, not quite 6 max but not full ring either
8, 9 and 10 - to me these are almost identical set ups for cash games

There is barely enough room to squeeze 9 people around most poker tables, let alone 10.

30% of the field instead of 33% of the field paid in a standard sng adds up to a ton in the long run. 10 man tables are so merge

I've always maintained we should be playing 22 handed. What's the point having 52 cards in a deck if you're not going to use them?

mostly live games. A lot of times at my home game we have 10-12 ppl so I always suggest making the game 10 handed so theres 1 less player waiting and about half the table is staunchly opposed, and its not like the guys I play with are just dumb fish, almost all are knowledgeable online players.

Also I play a decent amount at the Venetian and every time I sit at one of their 10 handed games someone always says something negative about it being 10 instead of 9 handed

Full-Ring is already a bastardized version of the game to begin with. Adding another person to make 10, puts it at something barely resembling poker.

That was the best part of playing online, I solely played 6 max cause there were always games running.

nothing is better than 6 max PLO
