Theres a lot of money from gamblers at the lower stakes, which makes the game easier and more profitable. If for some reason fish were playing chess at casinos and online, it would sweep the nation.

As to why poker specifically, its one the most complicated game that involves chance and strategy thats still very fun. Why bad gamblers choose to play poker is probably similar to why casinos never have a problem attracting people to come play their one sided games, people who aren't fully aware of odds just love to gamble. Whether its becasue they think in the end its all about luck and they are willing to let it ride or because for whatever reason they think they have an edge, as long as they fish play poker there will always be action.

If there was no money involved I'd not play poker. It's a very interesting game theoretically and is so awesome when everything you do goes right, but I'd feel like I was just wasting time spending so much time on it. I'd rather waste time playing madden or something. I am still probably wasting time playing poker if I can't get any better than I am currently.

I used to grind out money playing micro stakes pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey at six year old birthday parties. If I could find high stakes action on that, I'd quit poker in a heartbeat.
