Tony Phillips Eliminated in 10th Place ($12,950)

A hugely dramatic end to today's play here in the Amazon room. Thom Schultz raises to 20,000 from under the gun before Vanessa Selbst reraises to 75,000 from the cutoff. The action doesn't stop there though, as Tony Phillips raises again to 239,000 from the big blind. Schultz gets out of the way and Vanessa contemplates her next move. She asks how much Phillips has behind and calls when she's told it's 188,000.

Before the flop comes down Phillips slides his whole stack into the middle. The rest of the table can't quite believe what they're seeing; neither can we.

The flop comes .

Everyone's waiting on Selbst's decision and you can hear gasps of air taken when she announces "Call."

Phillips flips over .
Selbst flips over .

The turn comes and river !!!

She hits two pair to eliminate Phillips in harsh circumstances and scoop a massive pot. She defended her play by saying, "I'm here for the bracelet and I didn't want him to have position on me tomorrow with a ton of chips."

Don't like her 3-bet pf as an UTG raise pretty much is AAxx always and with a decent DS hand like KJ89 you don't want to have to stick all of it in preflop there. Since he shoved blind before flop came, her call is ok with TP and usually all live overs. If he waited and shoved after flop came out, it'd be much tougher unless she knows he'll shove naked Aces, not just AAxx with spades, which she'd be a big dog to.

Congrats! She had a monster chip lead entering the final table. Glad the stack held up hehe.

Vanessa Selbst rode a wave of good luck to defeat John Snipes in her first-round match. In one particularly notable hand, Selbst checked on the button and called a raise from Snipes. The flop came down 1062 and Snipes checked. Selbst moved all-in in for about 10,000, about twice the size of the pot. Snipes took his time, talking himself through all of Selbst's possible holdings, and finally made the call. The players showed:

Selbst: J9
Snipes: A9

Snipes' read was good and his ace-high was way ahead. Selbst stood up in preparation to make her exit as the 8 hit the board, giving her an open-ended straight draw. The river was the Q and Selbst was, miraculously, still alive. More than merely alive, in fact, she had the chip lead.

A bit later, with the blinds at 500/1,000, Snipes raised on the button and Selbst, still with the chip lead, put him on all-in. Snipes called and showed KQ. Selbst showed KJ, again needing a jack to win the pot. The flop was a kind one to Selbst -- J 10 2 -- and when the turn and river ran out 7,A Selbst was on her way to the next round.

Yep, more quality plays...

She has mentioned since then that (on 2+2 pokercast I think), that bluff has made her so much money. Players call her light still, even though pretty sure there is enough vids and HH out there to show she is an excellent player.

all this completely perplexing hate just makes me so ****ing pissed. vanessa is a ****ing SICK poker player, maybe the best hand reader i have ever had the pleasure sweating and there is absolutely NO QUESTION she deserved this win more than anyone. ppl chiming in on supposed strategic missteps are clearly 0.01/0.02 PLO players at best.
