The PokerNews article reads like an advertisement for LearnWPT and the WPT GTO Trainer. Perhaps aside from the coaching aspect of things there will be additional opportunities for poker media sites owned by PokerStars/The Stars Group to pimp the WPT and disguise said advertising as news articles.

It is disclosed at the bottom that it is Sponsor-generated content from LearnWPT. This is a fairly standard type of content that PN and other sites put out (whether one likes it or not), so I don't think we need to read into this too much about things "disguised" etc.

Also not quite sure where the PS/TSG angle comes in here and what you mean by the additional opportunities. PN is owned by PS but it still operates independently, as demonstrated with all the affiliate deals with competing online poker rooms.

They do this content with a lot of third parties, it's a core part of their (and most media sites!) business models. Side note - i imagine PN has taken a huge hit this summer with no live tours, that's a big part of their $$, so understandably they are doing everything they can to monetize their content and strike fresh deals like this one.

Anywho, just seems like a standard affiliate partnership that PokerNews has formed with WPT, and this is promotional content. Selbst has obviously struck a deal with PlayWPT to do some coaching content.

PlayWPT is a free-play "social" poker site (a la Zynga) that has been around for ages. Owned by the WPT themselves.


The "Selbst back on the felt" angle has obviously proven a success, given the creation of this thread.
