And I'm thinking about Doug Polk most specifically actually, in recently aggressively targeting recreational players with his free breakdown of well known poker hands on YouTube. This is classic in using the free to access platform of YouTube to introduce the idea of breaking down a hand and rearranging the approach to playing a hand. It is very well executed. It has the personality of Polk, the skills of Polk and it is applied to the very points that would a rec would find appealing about the game. It only takes a couple of looks at any poker hand, or even just to search poker on Google and that person will see the process by which the mystery or fun aspect of the game, is stripped away. It struck me that nothing is sacred, not even rounders! (Not that I see it as sacred.)
This is a very coherent and complex strategy that is surely an attempt to situate themselves in relation to any new deposits, or continuing players. Having the direct experience of the life cycle of a poker player, then you can say it is with 100% a clear vision of the sustainability of the ecosystem.
It also struck me why Pokerstars has recently not made such a big deal of the breakdown of big championships, such as WCOOP and SCOOP. Whether it is just savings or not, there is definitely less clear access to viewing the top players play. I would say it looks as though they at least had an interest in maintaining the mystery of online poker. The "online" channel on the Pokerstars TV app was not an option when I last looked?
