Hey all, I am working on my resume...and I need some advice about how to describe poker. Dont need advice on whether to put it or not-I am going to keep it on there-I think it has value (I am FINA and STAT major). Any ideas for how to describe poker? This is what I have atm.

Self Employed
Exploited Areas of Value in Online Gaming
• Built and managed $XXX,XXX+ from an initial investment of $500 during 2008-Present
• Performed standard deviation, variance, and risk of ruin calculations for risk analysis
• Consistently performed positive expected value decisions with large quantities of money
• Executed highly consequential decisions under extreme time constraint

Thanks for any tips,
Nick

thinly veiled brag

please don't put this on your resume.

if you insist on it, my tips are: 1) don't include any dollar amounts, and 2) remove the word "exploited" and the phrase "risk of ruin."

but seriously, don't put this on your resume.

"I don't know what this means, and I don't want to" is how this plays out for the person reading your resume like 92/100 times

from the past threads what exactly did you read that convinced you that this was the way to go...from what I read and the fact that I have some decent common sense i would definitely not include poker in my resume

if someone could find that youtube vid of the guy trying to get a stake on the dragons den, I think all employers (unless they are educated in some way or form about poker and internet poker preferably) would look at you like you are some degen...

You are just setting yourself up for some "but how much did you lose" type questions...

lol, this again. I love how people try and dress it up by making it seem complex and throwing in some terminology. They'll walk into an interview and the interviewer will be confused what it is and then they'll say "so you basically gambled online?" and won't think of you as any more the smarter however you word it. (Unless they actually play themselves too.) You may as well say you were in a coma or worked in a family business unless you're applying to something that would actually reward taking risks.

Well, one thing is for sure when putting this poker stuff on your resume - you will be asked a lot of questions about gambling. Be sure to give long-winded answers that go on and on and sound really excited about it too.

If you're going to use it, leave out the specific $ amounts (and maybe even the words like "poker, "gamble" etc. and use words/phrases like "Achieved", "Successfully grew", "Dynamically managed under pressure" etc. as opposed to just describing the actions. BTW I have over 20 years of job search exp in sales so this is no BS. Also I live in Alpharetta if you want to PM me I might be able to help you further.

This. OP sounds like an attempt atcomedy or a halfway decent level, but regardless, don't put poker on your resume. It has no upside, and a ton of downside. Come to think of it, experience with poker should give you the requisite knowledge needed to avoid putting poker on your resume - it should be obvious that it's a -EV decision.

Wait I'm confused ... why are you describing yourself as self employed if you're a student?

If you really want to mention it (and I have no idea if that's a good or bad idea for the field you're applying for; you certainly run the risk of running in to someone who doesn't approve) I'd be completely straightfoward and say "Paid for tuition by playing online poker while maintaining GPA and a healthy work/life balance" followed by some non-jargony description of the techniques which made you successful and let you evaluate that success (ie nothing like what you wrote!).

As somebody who interviews grad+ level entrants (for IT/R&D ie nothing to do with finance), I would be perfectly happy seeing that on someone's resume.

imo...there are many valuable things/traits successful poker players have learned in their journey with poker, that can be applied to the real world. OBV not every employer is going think this is a cool thing but imo certain employers (specifically in FINA-investment banking, trading, etc) will think highly of what ive done and how ive approached it. bottom line-im in college and i think being able to talk about poker in a smart way and from a technical standpoint is FAR better than saying i sat around picking my butt when i wasnt going to class

The last point really sounds like your trying too hard to impress. I'd reccommend rewording it if you wanted to put it in.

I'd also mention stuff about being self motivated, and stuff that demonstrates your work ethics.
