Lent (small amount) money to three friends in a poker room. Unlikely to get paid from one friend that I seldom see & even more unlikely to be reimbursed by the other two, given that they are deceased. Lesson learned.

I think Eli said he was owed about $2 million. But, as he said, this is (or was) obviously private information.

For the purpose of this post, assume Eli is telling the truth about being owed $2 million. And that these kinds of private debts are common among the high stakes players.

How many other players have debts and are owed too?

If a trusted third party was to gather all of this information, then a lot of these debts might be able to be cancelled/reduced, as A might owe B and B might owe C and C might owe A, but all of this is private, so they can't cancel/reduce the debts and loans.

Obviously the loan/debt database would extend will into the alphabet and beyond, and not just A, B and C!

Only if they were expected to actually pay back their loan.

It’s crazy how much it can eat at you over an amount that if you lost it in a game would be nowhere near as bad because you own it.

I had a ‘friend’ promise me interest, a case of wine and payment in a set amount of time which was a few months (was not a poker or gambling loan).

It took over a year and a half and when he finally paid up (just the original amount, no interest, no wine) he said: “maybe this will finally shut you up”

A few years later he had his gf approach me for another loan and I just told her he needed to find someone he hadn’t touched before.

This probably was just a translating error. Eli likely wrote in Hebrew "I currently owe 2 million" and his Hebrew-to-English 2p2 translator mistranslated it as "I currently am owed 2 million"
