Yeah, always thought this fact was important for poker players. When I played live I tried to take a short walk/Kush break every hour.

Is this causative or correlative?

surprised that this wasn't an article from the daily mail, which would be equally likely to say that standing up for long periods can give you cancer

You'll never find conclusive causative studies for lifestyle health issues such as this. There are just too many variables to reach definitive conclusions. But this study does demonstration correlation beyond other related lifestyle factors that are normally associated with sitting, such as those who are overweight, sedentary, and in otherwise poor health.

But standing for long periods = increased risk of joint compression, arthritis, high blood pressure, chronic venous insufficiency and a lifetime of back pain

That's why I just got a sit to stand desk and spend half the time doing both.

It won't really help you much. If your enviournment and your job is so bad like online poker is for human health, doing 5 classes yoga a day won't help you either.

Same applies to people who cycle in the gym and read books at the same time. I wonder how the health situation will be for the first full time gamers, who never did anything else in their lives (counter strike, wow, starcraft, poker), become 40+ years old.

Seriously. Of all the stupid studies to do. Why waste the time and money when it is complete common sense what the answer is. Is fire hot? This goes both ways as well. Running marathons, the running equivalent of sitting 10 hours, is extremely unhealthy and has a better chance of killing you on the spot. Like most things, balance is the answer.

I don't think it obvious that someone who is physically active and exercises regularly would still be at a significantly increased risk for disease and early death because they sit for long periods at a time.

I'm not sure why this wouldn't help.

From everything I've seen on the topic poker seems to be bad for human health because of the prolonged periods of physical inactivity. Blood clots seem to be the main risk as well as a gradual weakening of the heart muscle due to being sedentary. There are some other longer term things that result of having poor posture and some nerve / spinal compression from being seated so much. A walking desk seems to solve most of these problems, though like another poster mentioned, being on your feet all day also causes problems. The ideal solution seems to be a combination of standing/walking and sitting throughout the day.

Well, there must be 100,000 things that can kill you; so you eliminate a few......really cuts down your chances, doesn't it? As the saying goes:

"Something's gotta kill you".....and we'll never get out of this alive...
