Homer clearly says in yesterdays new episode....

"You know Selma from what I have seen here, Fat Tony has a lot of bad influences on him!
I walked through a door last night and they were playing cards......FOR REAL MONEY"

I think it was done in a satirical way of the current situation not in a poker = gangsters kind of way.
