Jack Daniel's regular sour mash is to whiskey/whisky what Folger's is to coffee. For some people, it does the trick just fine, but if you're looking to try out good stuff, look elsewhere. That said, I like Jack Daniel's rye. Not my favorite, but not bad at all, especially on a bang-for-buck basis.
Speaking of which, these two are probably my favorites that don't break the bank:
Scotch: Highland Park 12
Bourbon: Knob Creek
Scotches vary quite a bit based on the region, and as such, so do tastes.
