just to add to this: rheumatic fever weakens your heart. I imagine the pneumonia was more than his body could handle.

That is awful.
Hmm. A relative of mine had a similar situation. She went to the hospital and was diagnosed with pneumonia but was sent home the same day. She had to be re-admitted a couple days later and had a horrendous weeks-long struggle with the pneumonia, almost dying. Looking back, our family is not exactly enamored with their original decision to send her home.

Couldn't find any text (no posts, no blog...) by him on the entire web. Definitely old school, but here's a nice 7 min. TV interview with him on youtube. The best part is him talking about "living on the edge".

I'd suggest everyone go back and listen to Cardplayer's "The Circuit" radio interview with Chip. It's a two part interview that was conducted shortly after he won the HORSE tourny. It's great stuff.

This is really an unexpected and unfortunate occurance. He was widely regarded as a great ambassador of the game, bringing a degree respect and class to a game that has historically been viewed as a game for low-lives and degenerates.

And to address your question, pneumonia is a major cause of mortality in the world. While it is USUALLY a minor infection for young healthy people, anyone can get a life-threatening case. And the diagnosis "pneumonia" is really a very general term meaning "lung infection". There are literally hundreds of types of pneumonia, some much worse than others, some organisms more resistant to treatment etc.

Another thing to realize is that any illness can exacerbate underlying medical problems such as lung, heart and kidney conditions the person might have.

Great tribute Barry.

And I'll echo those saying that the circuit interview he did was really good.

When I first logged on to Fulltilt and seen Chips's photograph, I thought they'd signed him up. I honestly couldn't beleive it when I seen 1951-2007. Just so sad.

As others have said, Chip is a true poker legend.

My thoughts are with his family. RIP Chip.

Barry's blog makes it sound like pnemonia wasn't the cause of his death. He said the doctor diagnosed him with slight pnemonia a couple of days ago and he had been on medication for it.

They are guessing a blood clot or heart attack in his sleep as possible causes.

He also says that Chip had gastric bypass a few years back? Was Chip heavy before?
