I'm going to call this one like I see it: Eskimo was ethically challenged and was a pit degen. I didn't dislike him. But he wasn't at all trustworthy with money.

I saw this too, after eating there with my friends...except that he only had a $30 stack.

After eating lunch, he was no longer there. Then when we drove to the Strip on Flamingo Blvd., I saw him walking to the Strip.

BTW, Nick the Greek, a Poker Hall of Fame inductee, was playing 5-10 Draw during his last years.

One of the biggest poker degens ever. At the Horseshoe during one WSOP I saw an argument break out in one of the high stakes cash games. Eskimo left the table leaving his chips on the table. Told them he was gonna take an hour nap. About 4 hours later some guy is trying to get Eskimo's chips picked up so he can get in the game. The players in the game told him no way in hell could they remove Eskimo's chips. He got forcefull so they got forceful back. No way in hell is his chips coming off the table. It was funny as hell. Eskimo was a big action junkie in the high stakes games and no way were these guys gonna let the floor pick his chips up. They finally let the guy play over Eskimo's chips until he got back.

A poker player told me that Eskimo once was busted and begged him to let him stay in his Horseshoe hotel room. He gave Eskimo a key to his room. When the guy got back to his room that night there were three guys sleeping on the floor. "What the hell is going on here?" he asked them. Eskimo had charged them $10 a piece to sleep on the floor.

A crowd had gathered on the rail behind Eskimo in one of the WSOP tournaments. They were really sweating him. I got to talking to one of the guys. He was half laughing about what Eskimo was doing. He told me it was obvious Eskimo had over sold himself for the tournament and was trying to bust out. He was getting his money in with trash but kept catching cards. The sweaters were clapping and cheering but the look of disgust on Eskimo's face was priceless. "Do you have a piece of him?" I asked the guy. "Yeah, I'm stupid. I got 10 percent."

It was about a year or so after the poker boom started. I was in a game in the Horseshoe. I grabbed one of those new fangled poker rags out of the rack. It might have been Bluff or some other such rag. I went through the table of contents and busted out laughing. "What are you laughing about?" the other players asked. I showed it to them. One of the articles in the magazine was "Money Management" by Eskimo Clark. We all laughed our asses off.

RIP, Eskimo

This sucks. I was just thinking about him the other day too, wondering where he'd been.

I saw Esk about 18 months ago, in Southern California. Put him in some games. We had a couple dinners together. He made me us a few bucks.

I couldn't get him to react at all when i'd ask him to consider quitting smoking etc. imo he was a shadow of himself after the strokes. There was a time when Eskimo was on FIRE. He was always down to earth though, never let it get to his head or turned on friends. I don't remember the stories to relate them well enough but he had this uncanny ability and fortune to RUN over some series, I mean, win 3 tournaments in a row type of domination. These were 400-600 person fields in towns like lake Elsinore, Oceanside, or Reno; sometimes Los Angeles or Vegas. He would amass monster sucks and wield them like big sticks.

Hopefully someone can remember those details with clarity. I'll try to remember some of these in the coming days but that's what they were, amazing feats. Winning all 3 donkaments in some yearly 3 tourney short series, or winning the last, and biggest 2-3 of a longer series.

What did I say that was cold? Anyone that knows Eskimo knows he lived a hard life and still lived to 67 which I think is a respectable old age. He smoked, ate bad, didn't sleep much and still lived to be pretty old which I think is cool. Nothing cold about that at all. I'm sure if he could read this he wouldn't be offended by what I said so why should you? Well, aside from the fact that you're an overemotional child. RIP Eskimo.

Ray, I knew guys that knew Eskimo when he wasn't anything. He was way above me in stakes. But I watched him a ton in those high stake games. There is no mistaking that big smile on his face when he is in a big hand with you. That was when he was at his best. They had no imagination. Eskimo did. Eskimo was the original "In order to live you must be willing to die" guy.

What I know about him I told in good humor. I don't think Eskimo would mind.

Once saw Eskimo passed out in the Caesars sportsbook.

Later that day my wife and I shared an elevator with an awake Eskimo in the parking garage. He made his way to his van, a beat-up white number with a Missouri license plate.

My wife: "Man, that homeless guy smelled BAD."

Me: "That was no ordinary homeless guy, that was famous poker player ESKIMO CLARK!"

I think Eskimo Clark should get in first. He won more one-table satellites than anyone in history. He reached 1 million bankroll close to a dozen times in the 1990s when the opportunity to do so (small fields in tourneys, small limits in live games) was low.

Thanks for the link Michio there was some gold in there.

My favorite part:

"In 1999 he wanted to go to Atlantic City to play a $500 buy-in tournament. On Tuesday, he offered to drive a few guys from Los Angles. I saw them six days later. I said, “I thought you guys went to the East coast.” They said, “We did.”

I could not believe Eskimo could drive to Atlantic City, play and be back in less than a week, so I asked one of the guys what happened. He said Eskimo drove non-stop, chain-smoking the entire time. Eskimo got knocked out of the tournament in less than 3 hours. And he said, “Let’s go back.” They never even checked into a room. Imagine riding in a smoke-filled car across the country and back in six days. That had to be the most miserable poker trip in history."

Makes me and a friend's late night trips to AC from Lehigh Valley seem like child's play.
