Then again, "responsible journalism" is an oxymoron, so I think we all know what we can expect...
The problem with that is the general idiot public then start to think that maybe, just maybe, online poker should be banned.

Airred on ABC after the commercial.

Kind of neutral imo. Young guys need to come up with a better (or a more confident/comprehensible answer) answer to the "what are you contributing to society?" question.

The obvious answer is to ask what's the difference between what you're doing and some hedge fund manager, but the average joe won't understand that.

Interesting that Barney Frank is on Leno right now on another network, while Nightline had that story...

A good answer for the masses is that we're providing entertainment in return for a money. Just like going to the movies.

The real answer wouldn't be understood by many. Justifying your work based on it's "contribution to society" is an irrational (more importantly, counterproductive) way to assuage one's guilt. That's a mental process strongly associated with liberalism.

And the hedge fund manager creates wealth (increases the size of the pie). Most people don't understand how that happens or find it intuitive however.

Yep. According to ABC, it's because of an "internet loophole" with "offshore sites" to skirt the "US legal gambling age" of 21. In reality, PS/FTP are respecting the US legal gambling age of 18. Casinos are 21+ because they serve alcohol.

I thought it was a nice piece. Expecting big networks to give a 2+2 like, in depth interview is a reach. The kid they interviewed did a great job, especially for a 19 year old, incredibly well spoken. And yeah it would have been better if he came back with the hedge fund comparison but he handled the question fine and the truth is, it is a zero sum "job".

agreed 1000% and kudos to ABC for at least having the slightest bit of a clue in doing this piece. They could have easily set this kid up but I think they gave him a good opportunity to get his point across.

Yeah, he stammered on that one a bit. I just think pure honesty works there. This is the best response to that question:

Obviously stop after the American dream part, but the responses I get to this are always entertaining. Not yet has anyone spotted the reference; they are usually too pissed or laughing with envy to spot it.

I would love to see an 18-22 kid say this verbatim, with conviction during a TV interview.

Isnt a casino analogy better than comparing it to a hedge fund. A good player "gambles" just as a casino does, with a true mathematical edge. They also provide entertainment to people who want to take their shot at wining some money, just like a casino.
