What are some good poker related people to follow on LinkedIn?

Anyone have a good story about getting a poker industry job from networking on LinkedIn?

What area of the industry are you looking to enter? The few people I know are in the media area (current and former broadcasters, producers, reporters, etc.). I doubt I'm connected to any of them on there, though.

Please, someone prove me wrong, but I can't imagine there are very many. Not that there aren't poker people on there, but in terms of getting a job specifically from networking on that site? Strikes me as doubtful.

I was on the job hunt quite a bit about a year ago. Every single job I applied for, interviewed for, got rejected by, etc. – all required my filling out an application and/or submitting a resume. Zero percent entailed my connecting to someone via LinkedIn, having them swipe right, and going from there.

All in all, you take the words "poker industry" out of your question, and I'd be curious to see how many good stories there are.

Pretty sure a good amount, just not for jobs at places that have a HR department and a very formal application process.

I have somebody manage my LinkedIn and never check personally but there are definitely people messaging about stuff like job openings and if/where they could send a resume.

Your experiences aren't universal and I don't think justify OP not following this lead. The mistake, IMO, is viewing LinkedIn as the tool its marketed as (a legit networking tool) and what it is actually (a directory of people you can cold outreach. this is what it is for your purposes anyhow). Trying to take the legit networking approach on LinkedIn as you would at a country club is a misunderstanding of what it is. Decision makers don't chit chat over LinkedIn. But if you send them a concise offer (like hey I have XYZ skill, and ABC experience and I'm looking for a job) and you meet their needs (they're actually looking to hire) then it's perfect.

I'm not in the poker industry (it doesn't really matter what industry you're in), but LinkedIn is an excellent place to drum up business or get a job. A lot of people might not check their LinkedIn messages often but if they accept your connection request they often have their email available to connections, so you could send them a cold email.

Cold outreach is a numbers game. LinkedIn is a way to find more prospects to contact which increases your likelihood of getting what you want. It's easy work too. I've gotten meetings with people I would have never gotten through cold email or otherwise. Consider it just one more avenue in your strategy in addition to cold email, networking, cold calling businesses and so on. Your conversion rate will be low but not zero. If it's zero you're just not realizing your EV yet.

My two cents as someone who's drummed up a lot of business in the service industry on Linkedin.

I’m on LinkedIn even though I don’t use it for anything, but I do get contacted about possible jobs, usually in the gambling field, sometimes as a publisher, and occasionally as a mathematician/statistician. Of course, I’m now too old for any of these, but for a younger person, it seems like a good starting point to find a new job.

Mason, I think I'm older than you but that's just a number. Don't dismiss the premium value of your experience. I wouldn't look at "jobs" were I you, but potential one-off, lucrative consulting gigs certainly remain in your wheelhouse.

I also think LinkedIn is a pretty good due diligence resource to start off.

As for networking, it is at best a secondary way to look at someone you might already have a prospective contact for.

LinkedIn is a very valuable tool for finding job opportunities in any market, so why not in the gambling industry

Make sure you profile is updated with your skills.

There are thousands of job consultants, headhunters etc scouring LinkedIn for candidates. Get connected with them. The more connections you have, the easier you are to find.

I got my current job, because I was contacted through LinkedIn

Probably millions of people overall. Linkedin is absolutely massive. There's many full time recruiters who just spend all day on there messaging people.

If your in the US it would probably be pretty easy. Otherwise most international gaming companies run out of like Malta and other small countries.

Wow, lots of LinkedIn believers in here. Glad to see it – my previous department had an entire program to get our students to optimize their LinkedIn profiles. My contribution to that effort was taking head shots for them to use as profile pics.

In fairness, in my particular field, there is one specific website to go to, whether you're looking for a job or looking to hire. Not that you can't get a job elsewhere, or find a good candidate via other means, but if you're not starting there, you are severely limiting your options. (This would be like wanting to play in the NFL but refusing to play high school football. There are examples, but they're the exception by a huge magnitude.) I've had a few people reach out to me on LinkedIn, but they are almost always broadcasters looking for gigs. Obviously, the hiring/recruiting game is considerably different in any other field.

So yes, I know my experience "isn't universal." It still doesn't change my curiosity for how many good job stories of come from LinkedIn. I've never heard one, nor heard of one, but it doesn't mean they don't exist. A million and a half people voted for Jill Stein in 2016, and I've never personally met one of them, either.

That said, any examples for our OP to either of his questions? Also, OP... what field are you looking to get into, poker-wise?

Hello Wilbury,
I’m not looking for a job in the poker industry per se. I’m more interested in keeping up with what’s going on. Reading what interesting/important poker (or gambling) people are discussing. Stuff like that.

But yeah, LinkedIn is a great platform to be on to help aid someone in their job search.

I did it. Pretty sure all HR personnel at large companies instantly chucked my CV into the bin but I ended up getting hired at a small privately owned prop trading firm. Largely I'd say I got insanely lucky to find them but there does obviously exist employers who appreciate poker.

(don't PM me over this ppl, I can't help you)
