The only part of the Jon Sofen article that was IMO inaccurate and/or unduly sensationalist journalism was the last two paragraphs:

"Loeliger is a controversial figure in poker. Some enjoy her act, while others consider it childish and annoying. She often receives the same type of criticism as fellow polarizing players such as Phil Hellmuth.

That said, much like Hellmuth, she has plenty of fans, albeit a significantly smaller amount, who defends her actions."

I think the above is an exaggeration. A small number of people on this thread and on Reddit have criticised her, but that was only regarding some of her HCL appearances.

In my observation, in the chat of the HCL stream about 95% of people who mention her like her and are fans of her. So calling her a "polarizing figure" is just wrong.

Again, saying she "often receives the same type of criticism..... " is also inaccurate. She received some criticism relating to some of the HCL live streamed games and some
for this live MTT mucking incident. This IMO does not amount to "often", given that she's played many live MTTs, has been playing online for a considerable amount of time,
and has a clean record regarding being backed, staked and selling pieces, so none of these areas have received any criticism.

On the other hand, I do feel that David Lappin (and Dara O'Kearney who said a lot less in that clip) have over reacted somewhat to Jon Sofen's exaggerated version of the truth
in those last two paragraph's, because Sofen could have, but didn't, mention that in the interview with Nick Vertucci, PB mentioned that she was under the influence of recreational drugs,
(or it may have been prescribed and/or recreational) during the time of some of those HCL streams.

She was open about that not being good decision making at the time, also giving reasons why she did it, and said that she has improved in that area since.

The fact that Sofen didn't mention that part at all, to me means that he wasn't trying to do a hatchet job on PB, but that he was just a little sloppy towards the end of the piece.

I thought that PB came across well in the NV interview and credit to her that she recognised some issues and has addressed and improved them.

The trying to muck the cards incident is down to a lack of live experience, something I mentioned earlier ITT, which is that it is crazy for players to jump straight into $1K+ tournaments
before first learning the ropes in small buy in live tournies. It is crazy from an EV (playing proficiency) point of view and also with regards to poker etiquette and generally being able to cope with the surroundings and the people in live poker.

From her interview awhile back, not the Nick one, she was in Austria for awhile and I think got kicked out of the casinos there, and said the men treated her bad at the table, etc.

But I don't remember if she said she was born there.

Pretty sure she was born in Australia. Def lived in Australia prior to poker in the USA.

Her real name used to be Paulina Lichtman. She grew up in the US, spent a few years at Sydney University a few years ago and was a bit of a semi reg at the Star Casino in Sydney playing 2/3 NLHE and the odd non-casino pub tourney with no real success.

She's friendly enough but pretty cringey to be around and most people were nice enough to her without really giving her too much attention. I've played with her a bit, she's ok without being anything special and I'd be surprised if she wasn't a winning player in the small stakes games at the Star because 2/3 there is about as soft as it gets.

I just find it kind of amusing watching her recreate herself as some kind of poker icon and people actually taking her seriously. I just see her as the small stakes reg she always was taking shots with someone else's money...not really a hard thing to do, especially when she still doesn't have any results. Yeah she had a bit of a deep run in this $25k but who cares?, edges in tournament poker are way overrated.

Maybe all of the facts that you've written are true but I don't see what it achieves, or what good it achieves for anybody, by trashing her in the way you did, and no I'm not white knighting, I just don't like to see anyone kicked for the sake of it.

I Googled her real name and found that she ran the Sydney Marathon in 3 hrs 40 minutes and was an excellent skier as a teenager in the US. What have you done that compares with that?

I also don't see any problem with her or anybody else changing their name to reinvent themselves or to make a clean break to start a new chapter, sometimes that's what it takes. What would you rather, that she went into a downward spiral into the abyss. You sound really bitter for whatever reason, and you don't come across as a wonderful human being yourself.

I'd say she's a winning small stakes player and a good runner and skier too. I wish her well.

I don’t think DH trashed her at all. Pretty decent summation. If he wanted to trash her he’d have mentioned her suicide attempts she put all over the Internet for the world to see.
