I worked in a sleep lab. The more REM-deprived you are, the quicker into the sleep cycle you fall into REM. Usually it doesn't happen until 25-35 mins in. BUT in experiments where they allowed lab rats to sleep but deprived them of REM sleep (waking them up as soon as they saw on the EKG machines that they were going into REM), then when they let the rats fall asleep, they would literally slip into REM
immediately upon falling asleep. (Also, the rats eventually died from lack of REM sleep -- science still doesn't understand REM very well at all...but they know we need it to live.)
