I heard his wife really cleaned him out. Phil is living at the Crest Motel across from the El Cortez Casino in downtown Las Vegas.

Tiger Woods is worth nearly $1bn pretty much off the back of public endorsement alone. He has huge commercial contracts with sponsors, which account for the majority of his net worth, but ignoring that, the reason why there is so much money up for grabs in the sport itself, ie winning a golf tournaments, is because it is all provided by sponsorship in one way or another...either a sponsor puts up the prize pool, or a sponsor pays their sponsored player's entry fees which in turn make up the prize pool. If the players had no profile, there would be no sponsors, and the money would be 1/100th of what it is now. Sponsors and advertisers want to be associated with success. They are often paying for a complete person, Tiger Woods was the poster child of that...he was carefully manicured to appear whiter than white (pardon the pun) on and off the field, in addition to his professional attributes all with the aim of convincing the general public to buy something.

Phil Ivey and poker is a little different, but it is assumed that most of his net worth comes from Full Tilt, a company built on the profiles of several name pros.. "Learn, Chat and Play with the Pros"... Phil Ivey being their top dog. Their entire brand identity is built on Phil Ivey being Phil Ivey.

People/people in the public eye can't have their cake and eat it. There are plenty of sportsman etc out there who avoid cashing in on their celebrity and in turn lead quiet, intrusion-free lives. Media attention, good and bad, is part of the deal i'm afraid.

I am not saying Ivey is a "sellout", he is known for avoiding the limelight in interviews and things, but nonetheless he has a public profile of the best poker player in the world, which is aided by his lucrative position as a member of Team Full Tilt.
Both Ivey's and Tiger's "personas" are built around their work on the felt and greens, respectively.

Nike doesn't say "buy this apparel because Tiger uses it and he's the best human being in the universe", they say "buy this apparel because Tiger uses it and he's the best golfer in the universe".

Neither individual makes any claims, nor do their sponsors, that they are pious human beings. While Tiger and his wife were in the tabloids, this is only because of their celebrity, the cult of personality if you will, not because Tiger made a big deal of flaunting his family life around.

Obviously if we were talking about something affecting the game, say Tiger testing positive for steroids of if Ivey was busted in some collusion plot with Barry or some such, then obviously the gloves come off. But in neither case was anything approaching that. It was all personal.

And TMZ and the rest of the bottom-feeder papparazi are loathsome creatures for profiting from these guys' woes, and the sorry excuses for human beings that consume their product and justify their sorry existance aren't much better, and should look to filling their own lives rather than fancying someone else's.

IMO

It entirely depends on any prenuptial agreement, the state in which they got married, whether any children are involved, and how reasonable each person is prepared to be, among other factors.

People who are saying that she is automatically entitled to half of his net worth are misinformed.

From Wiki

Quote:
Jeter's personal life has been a frequent topic in gossip columns and celebrity magazines since his rookie year in 1996. Jeter had a well publicized relationship with pop diva Mariah Carey from 1997 to 1998.[67] Jeter also dated former Miss Universe Lara Dutta,[68] singer Joy Enriquez[69] and actress Jordana Brewster.[70] He is rumored to have dated actresses Scarlett Johansson,[67] Gabrielle Union,[71] and Jessica Alba.[72] Rumors also circulated that he was dating supermodel Tyra Banks after the two were spotted sitting next to each other at a New York Knicks game, but it turned out to be a coincidence; Jeter was attending the game with his father.[73] Jeter also had an on-and-off relationship with television personality Vanessa Minillo from late 2003 until early 2006.[74] From November 2006 to January 2007, Jeter was romantically involved with actress Jessica Biel.[75][76][77] Jeter has recently been connected to Friday Night Lights actress Minka Kelly.[78]
Wow, nice record.

Not surprising. It always struck me how in all those baller stories about Ivey, Mrs. Ivey was completely out of the picture. When you're balling it up like Ivey, the starter wife rarely sticks around for long.

Luciaetta's 2009 ME FT strategy for Phil was:

Use your massive skillz advantage...
To finesse the donkeys and "chip up" steadily...
Without ever risking your stack till you bust out in 7th.

That was the last straw.
