Tiger Woods is worth nearly $1bn pretty much off the back of public endorsement alone. He has huge commercial contracts with sponsors, which account for the majority of his net worth, but ignoring that, the reason why there is so much money up for grabs in the sport itself, ie winning a golf tournaments, is because it is all provided by sponsorship in one way or another...either a sponsor puts up the prize pool, or a sponsor pays their sponsored player's entry fees which in turn make up the prize pool. If the players had no profile, there would be no sponsors, and the money would be 1/100th of what it is now. Sponsors and advertisers want to be associated with success. They are often paying for a complete person, Tiger Woods was the poster child of that...he was carefully manicured to appear whiter than white (pardon the pun) on and off the field, in addition to his professional attributes all with the aim of convincing the general public to buy something.

Phil Ivey and poker is a little different, but it is assumed that most of his net worth comes from Full Tilt, a company built on the profiles of several name pros.. "Learn, Chat and Play with the Pros"... Phil Ivey being their top dog. Their entire brand identity is built on Phil Ivey being Phil Ivey.

People/people in the public eye can't have their cake and eat it. There are plenty of sportsman etc out there who avoid cashing in on their celebrity and in turn lead quiet, intrusion-free lives. Media attention, good and bad, is part of the deal i'm afraid.

I am not saying Ivey is a "sellout", he is known for avoiding the limelight in interviews and things, but nonetheless he has a public profile of the best poker player in the world, which is aided by his lucrative position as a member of Team Full Tilt.
well said.

Now, the long, arduous battle over Phil's hard earned money will begin. On the rail, his fans stand ready to cheer him on as he undertakes this difficult task.

Phil discovered that the CardRunners crew had merged their pickup lines, and bum-hunted his wife.

lulz. Obviously before! It was over 23 years ago, hence I have a different mother than I would have had. Or may be not since I wouldn't have been born if Man City hadn't taken precedence.

Who needs Internet pr0n when you can foot the bill for the real thing. I think Phil will be opening a night club in his house like 50 Cent.

This might be stupid, but would it be possible to have your bankroll legally declared as capital? In the same way a CEO might loophole taxes by saying he has no money, but it's all the company?
12-30-2009 , 10:13 AM
he could do better anyways...

and pic on op's link is a joke.

The only thing that would have been really interesting about this would be if she went after his share in FT and the courts got involved. But seems that isn't the case.

Well when a dude who owns a sports team gets divorced, does his wife get half of that? Sounds crazy to me.
12-30-2009 , 11:22 AM
what if his ex wife starts a staking corporation or a poker site and busts ivey in a few years?

We will find out. Watch the Dodgers situation then we will have precedent.

sad news, hope there is no tiger type storyline to this.

While you guys all focus on Ivey don't mind me while I turn my attention to the attractive newly single and rich lady. Can anyone say rebound.

Not to mention if I only play poker, shoot craps and go to the Rhino half as much as Phil did, I'll come off looking like man of the year in comparison.

Also, something tells me she might have the winning touch for mentoring up and coming poker stars as well. Rumour has it she had Phil wearing women's underwear and breathing through his eyes when he was just starting out. See you all at the ME final table next year bitc*hs , Oh lucietta!

Put people like Paris Hilton, Salahis, Gosselins, etc. on it, because they are the ones who specifically were seeking the limelight. If they wanted so badly to be famous without ever having done a single thing to warrant it, then they can be bashed for not behaving up to expectation. For guys like Tiger and Ivey, they were approached by big companies who wanted to use their abilities/image for their own financial gain, not the other way around. And if you were them and Nike/Full Tilt offered you $100 million, wouldn't you take it too? And after you did take it, would you take the initiative to volunteer to live a chaste lifestyle, and be able to fend off literally thousands of willing sluts? Don't berate people who happen to be famous based on their supreme abilities, berate those who actively seek out fame who have no business being famous and have nothing positive to offer society. And also, be honest with yourself before judging other people's social lives.

I agree. Don't hate the player, hate the game. H8tahs!

It usually sickens me to see a guy lose half in some divorce. But if she was with him when he was sleeping under a bridge cause he lost his bus money back from atlantic city then hell she deserves half. Hopefully Phil doesn't count this like a gambling loss and go on life tilt.
