I heard a couple stories (i.e. gossip) about Jordan's losses in the poker world.

Anybody know his game of choice? Or any stories in general?

Buddy of mine who worked with player accounts at Mohegan Sun in CT said that Jordan liked to play 6 hands of $25k blackjack at a time. His account literally had infinite comp dollars on it.

Keep in mind this is an era when gambling was even less accepted and society probably hadn't come to grips with how much money athletes were making.

Right around the time of the $900k golf-losses and $57k check to the drug dealer, the Bulls played a crucial game against whoever Charles Barkley (another degen gambler) was playing for (either the 76ers or Suns). The game was close and post-game interviews revealed that MJ and Barkley were making competitive bets on the game's outcome and the wager kept increasing as the clock wound down.

In light of the other Jordan allegations and the stories about the 1992 Dream Team, which did nothing but gamble on golf and poker during downtime, the NBA wanted to find out the extent to which NBA players were betting on and off the court, and to make sure that no players ever made bets on games again.

However much of a degen Jordan is, he's certainly not playing more than he can afford. He's worth hundreds of millions (after the divorce), owns an NBA team, a % of Nike's Jordan brand and still earns millions each year despite his playing days being over. Plus, he's actually a pretty smart guy and I doubt he's out there making stupid bets. He's a decent golfer and I'd imagine he's not bad at poker or blackjack either.

If you're interested in funny NBA gambling stories you should know about certified bad-ass Charles Oakely. Everyone in the NBA was afraid of this guy.

Back in 2000 Oakley (then with the Toronto Raptors) won $54,000 in a dice game from the 76ers Tyrone Hill. Apparently Hill took his sweet time paying the debt and Oak did not approve. "A gentleman pays his debt within a week or two," Oakley said.

Before a pre-season game, Oakley walked up to Hill and bitch-slapped him. He was suspended from the game. During pre-game warm-ups of their first regular season game, Oakley lobbed balls across the court at Hill, hitting him in the head.

"Everything in life doubles," Oakley said. "If he hasn't paid me $108,000 he hasn't paid me." Hill apparently paid the $108,000 in 2001.

In an unrelated Oakley story, he once told Charles Barkley "every time I see you I'm going to slap you," and proceeded to do just that. At player union meetings and during games - often right around tip-off, Oakley slapped Barkley. Not sure if or how that beef was ever resolved.

I remember hearing a couple of rumors which to my knowledge were never substantiated:

-MJ played baseball for a couple years to wait out ban from the NBA for sports betting iirc.

-That his gambling debts played a role in his father's death.

Probably the whole reason he played so hard was because he had to, to pay off all those gambling debts. Doubt he even cared about the game one bit.

Your implication is that Charles Barkley was so afraid of Charles Oakley that he let him slap him before games? N-word please.

That's ridiculous. I don't care how degen he is/was, Jordan doesn't have debts.

You doubt Michael Jordan cared about the game of basketball??? Please STFU and carry your ass. You should be banned for such an idiotic statement. Jordan was a degenerate gambler and probably still is. He has made and is worth more money that his whole family line will ever know what to do with, but to say he didn't care about the game. LMAO!

Speaking about Charles Oakley though he comes into a restaurant I go to from time to time. He's from the VA area. None of the staff can stand the guy and they say he's a real prick. Minus from getting his autograph when I was caddying at a local golf course in my teens I haven't seen anything to really back that claim up.

David Stern and the NBA would never have asked Jordan to retire. Such bs. Him leaving had an impact on the league for Christs sake.

Michael Jordan's achieved the rare level of fame where his fame is > any money he could possibly make.

I'd rather be a broke-ass Michael Jordan than a rich ass nobody.

Like, he's the guy that the game will never forget.... so as if he'd give a **** about gambling losses or other bs
