I was there. It happened. However, I didn't know how serious the situation was until after it concluded.
There were five of us on the way back to a room to raid someone's minibar. It was about 2:15am. As we walked by the front desk in the lobby I saw Layne and said to two of the others in my group, "Let's ignore him, no one tell him about the minibar." We walked past him and turned the corner towards the elevators. We entered, while the other two in our group were like 20 feet behind us. A couple of seconds later, they entered with Layne, and he immediately pushed all of the buttons. That gave time for four more people to enter, three Mexican gang bangers and some chick.
Layne immediately said something to them like, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, didn't mean to insult." One of the guys then said "you have to watch yourself." Layne smiled and replied, "I knew you guys were just ****ing around" and threw a body check into the main gangbanger. The guy didn't do anything and still had a serious look on his face. Layne then said, "I've never been so scared in my life" and started horsing around with the three. All of the guys started laughing and shoved Layne around the elevator.
We rode up and down stopping at every floor. We didn't want these guys to follow us so we never got off. Finally, after riding for a few cycles, two of the dudes got off and Layne followed. We exited on our desired floor and I just chalked the situation up to being a little annoying.
When we entered our room, the two in our group that trailed us downstairs looked physically ill and in shock. Apparently, before they turned the corner on the ground floor, Layne bumped into one of these guys. The guy got up in Layne's face and said "Yo, Holmes, go about your business." Layne immediately backed off and headed towards the elevator. He turned the corner, and then, apparently thinking he was out of their line of sight, began mocking them. He did a little gangster dance while rapping "Yo Holmes, go about your business."
I really have to credit the other two in my group for keeping their composure in the elevator. I didn't have any clue what was going on and still don't know why Layne wasn't shanked right there. There is some speculation that he might have known these guys from before. I'm still amazed looking back.
After we got into our room the guys that witnessed the downstairs scene decided that they really should go looking for Layne to make sure that he was all right. They came back several minutes later and apparently Layne and the other group were still riding the elevator up and down, horsing around. One of the guys had taken his shirt off and was covered with gang tats. Someone also had taken out a stick of chapstick and they were all making prison jokes as Layne was bent over thrusting his hips.
If one of my group reads this maybe they'll shed more light on the situation. I was pretty intoxicated at the time.
Thanks man, only took four pages to get anything resembling a response to initial question.
It's a funny situation. In the poker wold it's all good to act out of line most of the time. Interesting when this clashes with the "real world" or whatever.
Just heard some rumors that Layne Flack's mouth almost got him in some serious trouble at Commerce two nights ago.
Supposedly it was the night of the party for the WPT invitaional and Flack was wasted, talking smack or something in an elevator. Some scary latino dude took offense. Not sure what saved him but he made it out of there in one piece.
Person that told me is solid and says they saw part of it. Any firsthand reports of Flack from that night?
Solid news report, you must work for faux news or Fox
I neglected to also mention that one of our group who witnessed the lobby conflict actually turned his camera on in the elevator. I don't know if it was after the situation was slightly diffused or he turned it on to help calm everything down. But there is definitely video evidence of the bangers and the whole encounter.

He mocks them, then is later seen hanging out with them? WTF?
