There are many cities across the country that are beginning to see the first glimpses of the end of the recession. Las Vegas is not one of them.

the recession should be the least of there worries , i would say all the reservoirs going to run out of water in a few years being far more of a major problem .

Is this random hippie talk or are there sources discussing this problem?

I know Las Vegas wastes a ****load of water though, 6x the average use of where I live, and we waste tons too .

Is there some basis for this statement:

"'Internet gambling appeals more to addicted gamblers than people who are seeking a casino experience.'"

I would think the opposite is true.

Why would you think the opposite? I would think that addicts would embrace a device that allows you to gamble from the comfort of your couch at any time of night or day. Lower rake, more tables = more adreneline, ability to find any game that suits their degeneracy...I think it's a no brainer.

The average Joe goes to Vegas once a year (some with their family and some with their buddies) so that they can experience the bright lights and the endless booze knowing that they're probably going to blow their entertainment budget.

Maybe I'm wrong. What's the other side of the argument?

I didn't read the article, but I did watch the clip. I think they're right in saying this is the worst economic situation Vegas has faced, but I don't think the forecast of further gloom and doom is going to come true. Tourists are starting to pour into Vegas like they did before the economy crashed in '07. Gaming revenue was not only up last month, it was way up. This is great news for the underemployed, as increased casino business will lead to increased hours for the hordes of Las Vegans employed part time in the casino industry. Not everything is rosy, North Las Vegas just had to lay off a bunch of police officers, but as long as tourism revenue keeps growing more and more people will be able to find work.

I expect Las Vegas to resemble a post-apocalyptic Mad Max city in another decade or two. I would strongly encourage anyone reading this who understands what is coming to Las Vegas, Phoenix and other poster children for unsustainable growth in America to get out ASAP. The combination of economic collapse, changing climate (not enough water for Hoover dam, etc.) and spiraling energy costs will make these places uninhabitable. They are so far out of ecological balance that only incredible inputs of energy and capital allow them to exist. As those inputs go away so will the populations, but you'll want to get out now before things go totally Mad Max.

From Investor's Business Daily:

Quote:
Vegas gambling revenue jumps

Revenue collected on Las Vegas' main strip of casinos surged 21% to $544.4 mil in Aug., and revenue for all Nev. casinos climbed 12% to $944.5 mil, signaling a possible rebound from a two-year slump. Casino and resort operators like Las Vegas Sands (LVS), Wynn Resorts (WYNN) and MGM Resorts (MGM) have been trying to book more conventions to drive room prices higher after years of cutting rates. Sands rose 4.3% to 37.30 and Wynn 5.1% to 93.85. MGM soared nearly 16% to 13.56.

well, the times article says this: "After months of precipitous decline, revenues increased 3 percent in the first quarter of 2010, but then dropped 5 percent in the second quarter, according to the Center for Gaming Research."

And that Investors Biz Daily link implies that casinos are booking more conventions, so this just seems to be padding numbers? still, 21% and 12% are really big jumps, hopefully some of it sticks.
