Maybe he is overlooked because of his goofy manuerisms/looks at the table and his past as an actor/commentator. Kotter got skills!
on a scale of 1-10.....10 being Phil Ivey....Gabe is a 7.5

Didn't you watch it? He sat down and asked Doyle for a stake. Without thinking twice, Doyle slid him over a stack (I assume it was ~100k). Now really, would Doyle do that if he questioned Gabe's judgement?

Matusow tossed him a 1k chip (I think Matusow had offered the 1k as a bribe, figuring he'd lose considerably more than the 1k). Gabe gave the waitress the chip and asked for some $1's, so he'd have a stack of bills and look ballah. I always found it funny that Gabe did this, ensuring that even if he busted Matusow's 1k would not be at risk, as the $1's didn't play.

It's interesting that when Phil Ivey limps under the gun with 54 suited he "mixes his game well", but when someone like Gabe Kaplan does this it is a horrible play. Also betting out on the board in question, if his opponents miss that board, they normally would give him more credit for a hand considering him being so short in chips.

Also in reference to his calling of the action on HSP being not up to par, I think the opposite. Especially considering that they see all the hands after they are played, and voice over in a studio well after the show has been filmed. Gabe by far is the best commentator on televised poker imo.

gabe seems to have insight most of the time, but i will concede some of the commentary is awful to internet players because the game is much nittier and played much differently online than live. some of these pros would most likely get crushed by even good mid-stakes internet players. fwiw, he's also trying to present it well for the viewing public, not necessarily for the internet players that have a better concept of what's going on than most.

when negreanu comes back to the table, one of the guys says "hey they're letting you back into the game after commentating?" or something to that effect, which meant he was commentating live then going back into the game does it not

Child its a show. You don't remember DN giving a snide smile? DN left the table, went for a walk then came back. Jesus boy wonder. Do you think that Norman Chad sits around for 11 straight days and comments on every hand?

And just so you know, when you watch Power Rangers tommorow morning, its scripted and it is NOT live. So try not to get to upset by the outcome.

Great point. I think he does a great job of trying to explain the thought process of some of the players during hands, but in a way the casual viewer can understand. I don't think anyone really did that before him, besides Howard Lederer on the old Fox network tournaments they used to show back in the day.

On top of that, some of the things he says are just plain hilarious, that that alone makes for good tv (Durrrland, Laak's nitiness, Fred Chaminara/Moe Green, etc.).

You might be judging by what you see...Don't bother judging by the respect he gets from regular high stakes players who he's logged countless hours with...he sat in impromptu on HSP and held his own, came on a cash game and did ok, and yet he's a total donk...whoteva

gabe can play but I think it helps tremendously to constantly see the hole cards or everyone and not just the few that are televised. He gets to see how everything is played the true flow, context etc. It's why I don't think poker site owners should be able to play on their own sites. A huge conflict of interest, how hard is it for the owner to retrieve past hand histories/hole cards of an regular opponent.

Dont you think they should color up the chips on PAD when it gets down to 3 handed or less?? All those back and green are pointless at 1k-2k blinds.

He also commented during theses PAD episodes...
That he hadn't played poker AT ALL in a year or so.

Gabe has been MIA...
Since he was FT Bubble Boy in WSOP 2007 HORSE...
Knocked out by Deeb's quads.

How many of you have finished 9th in WSOP HORSE?

The guy is 65 and probably worth $100 million...
Knows he's maybe Top 200 player kinda like Sklansky...
(Maybe higher in his specialties)...
But really cannot compete with the Top 20...
Probably doesn't care enough any more.
