http://www.cardplayer.com/tournaments/videos/14651

Start around 1:30 for the self-incrimination.

Cliff notes:

- Attempts to sotfplay an acquaintance from the Borgata (whose name he doesn't even know).

- Plainly admits to attempting to collude/softplay with an AC acquaintance in this interview

- For some reason is trying to get his opponent to fold a worse hand

- Doesn't understand the difference between value betting and bluffing.

- Kimberly doesn't seem to understand that what he's describing is "wrong" and briefly engages in strategy discussion with Joe on softplaying friends.

Say it ain't so, Joe.

the better video is by far Barry Greensteins "Now your making me hot!" "Stop knocking me with your boobs, they'll talk about it on the internet"

i'm pretty sure that 100% of the times I have played live poker someone has bet the nuts into another regular that they know, and after they get called they are like, 'man! i was betting to let you know i had the nuts!' did i mention that i hate live poker.

i don't think he was too confused about value betting/bluffing though, i thought all he said was that he considered betting the Kxx flop for value with QQ because he thought the guy would call hands like JJ, TT a lot of the time? seems fine to me. maybe i missed something.

He's referring to this hand:

Quote:
Joe Simmons Takes Out Vinny Napolitano Before the Break

On a board of K87Q Vinny Napolitano checks to Joe Simmons who bets 40,000. Napolitano calls and the river is the 4. Napolitano checks once more and Simmons puts him all in.

Napolitano tanks for several minutes, asking Simmons if he will show him his cards. Simmons tells him yes but after a few more minutes Napolitano says that he can't get away from his hand and makes the call.

Napolitano turns over pocket eights for middle set but his suspicions are confirmed when Simmons shows pocket queens. Simmons eliminates a devastated Napolitano and chips up to 406,000.

I think I played with this guy at WSOP. Isn't he in music industry or something?

Also, how do people this ****ing stupid find 10k for a tournament?

I thought Joe was a full time AC cash grinder. I think he's a nice guy, too, but I think it's absurd/telling/whatever that he openly admits to something that is antithetical to the rules of poker.

You're thinking of Run (Joe Simmons) from Run DMC.

I remember reading something about him (article, or tourny results) and him saying that he would never want to quit his day job to become a professional poker player.

Also, on Poker Road Radio, they interviewed Chris Reslock (an AC player) and he actually brought Joe up, saying something along the same lines... That he would never quit his job, etc.

So my guess is that he's not a pro. The rest is up for interpretation as to how much breach of etiquette/****ty play took place.

Shane
I agree 100%. And if you actually do soft play...how stupid are you to talk about it during an interview.

I find it funny that your not getting the reaction that you probably thought you would in this thread.

I believe on last year's WPT they said he was involved in the music industry.

I have seen so many instances of totally obvious (and sometimes explicitly acknowledged) softplaying on the East Coast at Foxwoods and Borgata, which are probably only the tip of the iceberg because other slightly smarter individuals make it less obvious.

Ive played with Joe many times. You are reading too much into what he said. He's not the most sophisticated player, I think thats what comes off in this interview not any level of collusion.

also, he is a very nice guy and not a poker professional.

From his bio on the WPT website:

Quote:
A native of Philadelphia, Joe Simmons has spent his years involved in music - as a deejay, hip-hop music manager for groups like The Roots, and music producer. Though he earned a degree from the University of Virginia in electrical engineering, his first love was and is music. But along the way, he took an interest in cards, and through self-instruction and sheer tenacity, he has done well enough to play poker on a professional basis for more than four years.

you did... he was at your table on day 2 when I was next to you when I briefly held the CL and you also had a huge stack

nice dude who is fairly new to big tournaments, last year in LA he told me he was just getting into it I believe... pretty decent player, nothing special but not a donk

I guess I wish I had chosen a different title for this thread, because I am not trying to single out Joe, but to point out how endemic this level of corrupt thinking is, especially on the East Coast. It's amazing to me that someone like Joe (who plays more than enough poker to theoretically "know better") must think that it's such a natural part of the game to signal a helpful hint to a friend that the mention of it in an interview wouldn't raise any eyebrows. Anyway, I think I am going to join the league of people who don't care about stuff like this, since trying to monitor even a fraction of the corrupt **** going on in poker is an exercise in frustration.

what gets me is that Joe seems to be a pretty successful person (music industry manager) from his bio, so how could he be so ****ing stupid to admit to the poker media that he was colluding/softplaying?
