"Hey man! Funniest poker guy on TV."
I basically introduced myself then left immediately because I feel uncomfortable with celebrities. I've have some super awkward moments.
He was super nice and wanted to have a conversation but I GTFO ASAP LMAO
I wish I stayed for a bit.
Haha I agree with all of this except for the notion of Stapes being a celebrity. That part literally got a laugh out of me. Great dude, though.
Still, I can understand his being a divisive figure in the poker broadcasting space. He employs something of a dad-joke style to his commentary, which i enjoy but we already know how many poker players are just-the-facts types. It didn't work for Dennis Miller on Monday Night Football decades ago (even though I liked that, too), and it's probably a tough sell for a large portion of the audience today.
Besides, poker folks get caught up with an announcer's poker bona fides, maybe even more than in actual sports broadcasting. This works against Stapes in a way that doesn't with more accomplished players-turned-broadcasters (e.g. GOAT analyst Nick Shulman)
