Pretty solid history of poker article here, although not as in-depth as OP it does go from 98 to the present dayish.

Really informative, thank you. It's a shame that you're banned because now pt. 2 will never arrive.

I remember when it was play money only, and you could win T-shirts and other prizes. I remember the robot, the blond woman in the blue dress with big boobs, among other characters at the table. Good times.

considering what's been happening, thought I would bump this for nostalgia.

Maybe someone knowledgeable enough can make a Part II leading up to now.

IIRC he does, and was going to post it before he was banned. Or, he was about to write it, or something. I remember him being banned because he tried to link to his blog where Part 1 was originally posted.

I only read Part I today, but it was a blast. I may be a newcomer here, but I actually played IRC poker. At the time I was a decent 7-stud player, but didn't know much about Hold 'Em. Jesus, what a tough game. Every other time I showed my hole cards the screen would start spaz-scrolling with:

X: What an *******.
Y: First time playing this game? *******.
Z: You might want to try something simpler. Like Tic-Tac-Toe.

You just can't imagine how ripe Party Poker seemed after dealing with all of those math geeks who didn't have a real dime on the game. They were truly brutal.

Same here. I played Undernet Poker with Steph, X-dot, Dogmeat, and all the regs in 1996- 1999. We played 5 card draw, and had contests for first to million, then reset. (I think I still have the old poker client installed on an old 486 that's in the attic... ) that was before the holdem boom... the GPKR client was what allowed us to play holdem. It was a strange transition for me.
I've been laughing the last few days as I've been playing on the playchip tables. I seem to have gone back 15 years somehow, and am again playing for nothing but fun, with a MUCH larger player pool...
