There's no way the AA should shut down on the turn after getting flatted on the flop. The 9 is a great card for him. I mean, obviously, who is in the pot with K9 or 67 in that spot?

P.S. DN's small ball approach works both ways. Controlling pot size means you have to outplay everyone post-flop, and if you're going to call a pot-sized bet from a guy on the flop who almost definitely has you beat at that moment, and there's still a random hand behind you, you might want to have more than three outs (yes, there were actually two kings as well, but since most of the bettor's range includes a king, I wouldn't count them for much).

He will call it a cooler, and I can understand that thinking, but there were two pivotal decisions that cost him the chip lead: preflop call of a raise from that particular player, and flatting on the flop in a very weird spot.

I can see myself making both of those decisions, but the truth is, I would lament them both after the fact, especially given the fact that I am the best player at the table.
