JFC, of course Negreanu had a "live read" on that woman. Everybody at the table knew she had the nuts. That table had been playing together for several hours. She was a huge nit. She never bluffed. She got the bare minimum when she had QQ>KK when a queen flopped (including checking back the river when one possible straight got there). She folded to any aggression unless she had a top top hand. Daniel had been running her over the entire time.

Please, can we stop using that hand as an example of anything other than huge nits are unlikely to win huge pots when they make the nuts due to their nittiness. Putting things like that into the "live read" category is a joke.

Do you want to bet me on if he’s up or down in tournaments this summer? I’ll ask him. Some speculation is more accurate than others.

Maybe it's not obvious, but, this is an example of what I mean. You can see the 'notables' (people WSOP.com were tracking) who busted, which surely would include Hellmuth in any event he entered.

Agreed.

However, this analysis would seem to measure something more:

Hellmuth has a high WSOP ROI even if you assume he played every single event over the years.
Now, one can still argue sample size, running hot, etc., but it makes me think there must be *something* going on there. If it's not poker playing ability, maybe it's getting good reads, intimidating people, knowing how to pick his spots...hard to imagine an ROI like that without some kind of skill involved.

I know you weren't making a judgement on skill level in your previous posts - do you think the analysis in that article lets us do so? Or, if you prefer to avoid judging a specific player, to put it another way, if one has both sides of the equation (cashes AND buy-ins), is there a large enough sample size where the numbers can be used to assess skill?

Getting good reads, intimidating people, and how to pick spots aren't poker playing abilities?

What I meant is that his actual playing of specific hands that so many like to pick apart could be sub-optimal, while he makes up for it with other strengths.

I'm not here to get involved in any ridiculous "how good/bad is Hellmuth" arguments. I just thought the linked article was an interesting reply to the "but how much did he lose?" argument with regard to entry fees and whether he's profitable, and was curious about DD's (or anyone else's, of course) take on it.

Sssh, pointing out his hatred for people smarter than him (and boy are there tons of those) makes him say you "lost" or some bs. And that is true just because he says so, just like he says sample size ain't worth jack so it is true.

I got it! This explains it all about Mr. Hellmuth. Ready? Are you sure? Maybe you should all sit down before you read this.... Okay, don't say you weren't warned.

Drum roll please............................................ .............................................

Phil Hellmuth may in fact be a long lost brother or first cousin of Howard Stern! Ya know?!! Just like it was discovered recently how Larry David was a first cousin of Bernie Sanders but they never knew it for so long up until now. Hey, just remember - anything is possible.

Hellmeuth is an entertaining character. Even if he isn't the most GTO player in the world he is amusing to watch and good for the game.

He cashed 9 times and missed 11 or 12 days of action. Just made 1 Final Table, but it's still somewhat impressive.

I don't think he played any of the 10k+ though. I wonder if he doesn't think he can win them or if he doesn't want to invest the money.

He was deep in other tourneys when some of the 10ks were on so that could be one reason. Pretty sure he played one or two of them though.

Maybe. I didn’t follow him that much. He’s now at 12 cashes and 2 FT while missing a little under 2 weeks. Really impressive.
