When I think of this, my mind immediately goes to Chip Reese. I've heard many people – e.g. Doyle Brunson, Mike Sexton, Andy Bloch – cite as one of Chip's skills as his friendly demeanor at the table. Chip was pivotal at getting high-stakes games going because, well, people liked him.

I can't remember where I saw it (or heard it) and I might not have it exactly right, but Sexton shared a story about some whale who ran hot in one of Reese's games. The guy won a huge pot against Chip, then immediately "realized" he had to leave. It was basically a hit-and-run under the guide of "oops, I have to be somewhere."

Reese remained complete positive and forthright, without an ounce of steam (another of his poker skills). He congratulated the guy on his fortune and thanked for him coming. When the whale left, Reese turned to Sexton and said, "See that? Be friendly to him, and he'll want to come back and play with us again." Of course, Chip also knew that the whale's return will provide the opportunity to win his money back.

Sure, it doesn't translate well to online poker, but I assume this general concept is what DuckSauce referenced.
