Return ticket is especially important I think. I got turned back at the US border once because I didn't have one. They don't want you to enter the country and work there illegally. A return ticket indicates your desire to go back to a more certain degree.

Anyone know a cheap, safe place to grind for a week?
It probably would have to be in or close to Vancouver, as I would need to exchange for P$ while I'm up there.
Is there a skype group, in case I want to exchange for P$ on short notice?
TIA

Once again, The Economist Intelligence Unit* has named Vancouver the most liveable city in the Western Hemisphere for 2013, and behind only Melbourne Australia and Wien Oesterreich in the world rankings. Toronto and Calgary took the next two spots in the rankings of 140 cities of the world. Montreal was the only other Canadian city evaluated, and it ranked outside the top 10, but still higher than any other western hemisphere city.

It should be noted that the rankings do not seem to consider factors such as cost of living or the right to carry a gun, but do take into account climate.

Little more context:

A weighted average of those five numbers gives each city its final score.
Highest-ranked US city is Honolulu at 26th overall, no argument there. Next highest is.. Pittsburgh, PA at 30th? Uhh... oh.

Paris 16th, Tokyo 18th, New York 54th, London 55th, Beijing 74th.

140th out of 140: Damascus, Syria.

Vancouver also clocks in at 19th in Monocle magazine's annual quality of living survey of 25 cities, which includes zero Canadian cities in the top 10, 3 Japanese cities in the top 13, and seems put together pretty much on whim. This list includes Singapore at 15th, with the following hilariously subjective description: "A great city for business, but it's generally considered just plain boring."

So I've been exclusively an online SnG/MTT rec player the last year or so living in Vancouver, and I'm planning on dipping the toe in the water of live play. There are a ton of live tournaments coming up in the next few months and it seems like a good time to give it a shot and get out from behind the keyboard. I don't have any huge expectations, and for me I'm still nowhere near good enough to call this anything other than a fun hobby. So as a complete noob to the live scene, any advice for me about trying a Satellite at Fraser Downs this weekend? I was thinking of entering a noon event on Sunday for $90 that gives seats to the $880 Fall Poker Championship in a couple weeks. Anyone play at Fraser Downs regularly that has any tips? How early do you generally have to get there to reg for a weekend tournament? Any major gotchas or things to be aware of playing there? Same for Edgewater. I'm thinking of entering a few of the nightly WCPC Sats running there in the next few weeks. Anyone have general advice about those places or things you wish someone had told you when you first took a step from online into the live scene? Especially in Vancouver.

I am a local to Vancouver. Calgary and Montreal are fricken freezing for a lot of the year. For that reason I would not really be interested in living in either city. OTOH they likely get more sun vs. Vancouver rain. I will take Vancouver every time over Calgary though.

having recently lived in a very sunny city (winnipeg) and a very rainy city (vancouver), i will say that the sunniness in the winter helps alot. it never seems too cold when you are in the sun. vancouver is dreary (esp. two winters ago when there wasn't one nice day i remember) but i don't have to put on a jacket ever in the winter (two winters so far). problem with prairie winters is how long it is. it's like 6 months sometimes (november 1 to almost may 1.... ok, maybe more like 4.5 months)

Nobody's calling Winterpeg liveable, at least not in comparison to Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary, Montreal or Ottawa. Maybe compared to Pittsburgh .

Sort of random, and I'm not sure if this is the right place for it, but....... i have an apartment in Vancouver and am looking to spend a bit of time in NYC over the next few months. So thought id see if anyone's interested in a house swap.

I have a pretty nice place in Gastown, well furnished, high floor with mountain and water views. ( Google Woodwards building if you want an idea of the place, building and location) 2 bedrooms( one set up as office, with 3 large monitors that can be used).

Would be pretty easy for someone that wanted to come out and play for anywhere from a week to 2 months between now and the end of the year. I'm planning on making a few 1 to 2 week trips, and possibly for all of November and December.(Could totally work for the last week or so of wcoop)

It would need to be a somewhat comparable ( by nyc standards) whole apartment and not like a room in a share or anything. I also wouldn't really be interested in a large group of people staying at my place, just like one or a couple type thing.

Williamsburg would be perfect, or anywhere below about 20th and above Downtown in the city.

Failing a swap i will be subletting for November December maybe some of October too if anyone's interested.

Anyway shoot me a message if there's any interest.

fwiw in regards to the office chair question I asked some weeks ago, I ended up going to Chairlines on 4th avenue and got a Humanscale Liberty. They have some OK choices and as an added bonus, the girls working there are cute.

The Mercer Quality of Living Survey also ranks Vancouver first among western hemisphere cities (5th worldwide) followed by Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal. Honolulu (28th worldwide) and San Francisco both beat out Calgary. Pittsburgh, which ranked fairly high in the EIU list, was eighth among US cities, behind also Boston, Chicago, Washington, New York and Seattle.

Hmm surprised Montreal is in the top of anything quality of living. There's tons of reasons why it can suck there including the winters, high taxes, corruption and poor road conditions.

I've been in Kelowna for about 12 months (4.5 hour drive from Van; city pop 117k in 2011). Much much much dryer, sunnier and hotter than Van for half the year and the winters are colder than van but not as cold as clgry. Traffic isn't bad either... Just sayin...

I haven't read the detailed scoring, but I suspect Montreal ranks up there because of things like education, health care, child care, public transit, economic stability, housing, public recreation, museums, restaurants, culture, crime rate, air travel connections, freight transportation facilities, utilities, and scenery. Oh, and the women!

For poker players, some people might argue it has the best live games scene in Canada.

The winters in Montreal are not that bad. Montreal is in the same Köppen climate zone (Dfb) as Zürich, Munich, Geneva, Ottawa, Toronto, Berlin, and Stockholm - about 1/3 of the cities ranked ahead of it.

Generally, there are more reasons why nearly all cities in the western hemisphere suck more than Montreal.

I'm a Seattle player wanting to connect with some people in Vancouver for part-time access to Poker Stars. I'm 30, a CPA, played D I football, and now I run an educational software company that just received Series A investment. I've had a good amount of success at poker (tourney and ring) and want to continue to pursue that. If anyone is willing to expand their network to a solid dude that would be awesome.....

Thanks peeps.

Hey guys, mot sure of the beat place to post this but thought id ask...
I actually moved to vancouver this week and set up a TD account and a cibc account as back up in case I have any issues with either. So far I have been having trouble getting funds into my pokerstars and skrill with my TD account. What is the best way to get funds to your skrill account and then into your stars account? Does getting a transfer from a friend solve this problem?! So far I have deposited a test deposit for non-gambling purposes but can't put it into pokerstars, and I tried doing a deposit into skrill for gambling purposes but for whatever reason I was denied. At this point I'm not sure what to do, so wanted an opinion before I transfer money to a friend so that he can transfer to me on skrill.

Can go to any Esso gas station and buy UKash cards, think you can buy 4X $150 at each station, like a 5-6% vig.
Pretty convenient if you need to get smaller amounts on/are waiting on a bigger transfer.
