- He was waiting for some stuff coming by mail and a guy was disguised in Fedex/Purolator guy. As soon as he opened the door, the guy rush into his house and another guy joins him.
- He tries to fight them but they are two so they got him. Lots of kicks, punchs to the head, lots of blood. They threatened him and his family.
- He fears for his life and give them what they want.
- They tied him up, beat him again, cut his phone line and steal his cell phone then run away.
- Now he says he is fine, only a black eye and a few bruisings.

first of all it seems like the dude in the article linked was not sentenced to 12 years. he was sentenced to life in prison with a first chance at parole afte 12 years.
that doesnt mean he will get out after 12 years he might very well never spend a nother day outside of jail ( at least thats what a life sentence with chance of parole after 12 years means where i am from).

i am not even sure if i should post the following but unfortunately i have been victim of multiple robberys and also one home invasion maybe two depend on how you count it since one of them wasnt a invasion of my home i was just a guest at someone elses hom when the invasion took place.
robberys/home invasions can range from very disturbing and dangerous to a pain in the ass but not that bad.
it really depends on how profeesional the partys involved behave.
the last time something like that happened to me was on the not that bad side. some people forced entry in my home pointed a gun at me and told me to sit down after that they offered me a smoke asked me to stay calm and took what they wanted and left. i am not saying mr.duhamel wasnt behaving professional, all i am saying is if you are a pokerplayer and have to associate with shady charachters ( that might not be a must for a lot of you, but playing live poker in many places, you will have to deal with criminals) you should know how to be robbed properly. unfortunately you dont have any influence on how professional the dudes trying to rob you will handle the situation but you need to handle the situation as good as you can.
my general advise would be to not fight back unless you have direct access to a deadly weapon and no problem using it. you should never start waving a gun in the face of dudes like that and try to make them leave, if you pull out a weapon you use it immediatly. do not try to fight back unless you are cool with killing the villians in this situation. you dont want to pull a gun and then choke because guess what you just got yourself killed.

sorry for the derail but a lot of pople in this thread didnt seem to be in such a situation before and i thought my unfortunate expirience might be of value for someone having to deal with such a situation.

Being robbed isn't fun at all, and home is by far the worse place.

And you are correct about a life sentence in the uk, but in practice, if you aren't actually a danger it is 12 years and sometimes even less if you don't get life.

yeah i dint say beeing robbed was nice or anything but one dude might get away with just beeing robbed while someone else might be killed in the same situation. try not to be stupid, try not to get yourself killed or hurt would be my main point i guess.
