Conversely, I don't find Jim Gaffigan all that great, but I can still hold someone who does in relatively high esteem. But anyone who has ever cracked more than a courteous smile at a Dane Cook or Carlos Mencia punchline will never, ever receive anything but scorn from me for their opinions on comedy.
Well said. I happen to think Jim Gaffigan > Steven Wright, but I can objectively evaluate the quality of SW's comedy. There is nothing intrinsically funny about Dane Cook's "comedy." You may laugh at someone getting hit in the nuts with a baseball, but it's not comedy. And someone getting hit in the nuts is 10x funnier than Dane Cook.
BTW, accounting for preference in comedy only goes so far, imo. For example, I don't see how people can find Robin Williams to be anything but annoying, even though he is a true comedian, while Dane Cook is not.
