The book is pretty damn fine as well.

Also, Chow Yun Fat doesn't suck. He's the God of Gamblers, obv.

i know it's a really short part(s?), but the poker scenes in michael clayton were surprisingly realistic and that made me happy.

dude TILT ruled hard...I don't see it as trying to portray a 'realistic' poker life, but rather as being a high-level comedy, seriously, such gold in this show

It is well known though evidently not widely known that the best poker movie is California Split. Begins with a card going off the table in a lowball game and the ensuing fight. Robert Altman, Eliot Gould:
It's debatable whether it's really a poker movie. It's more a movie about degen gamblers.

"Triple up and double it!"

(everyone gives looks of acknowledgment that this is something they all understand and consider to be a valid strategy)

I agree TILT was pure gold. Got annoyed at how much of it didn't make any sense. But when they were on a roll with their unintentionally incredible comedy it was truly genius.

The problem with analyzing the poker in poker movies/tv shows is that if they have to make it for everyone; not just poker aficionados. Making a movie showing somebody grinding away for hours and not getting anywhere is no fun because the audience requires action to maintain interest.

It's the same reason you don't see detectives doing hours of paperwork on cop shows.

If they made a few small changes to the play in rounders, it would be fine. Turn the 100 bb re-raise in the 200bb effective stack HU into a 5-bet shove into a 3k pot and tweak a few other things so that the poker world (from 10 years into the future) wouldn't complain about it, and you've got yourself a great movie...but let's face it, it IS a great movie already.

I think a half-stack 3-bet was always a bit ridiculous, but poker has become a hell of a lot more refined in the last decade. I'm sure there were tons of rich fish out there who would fall for it back then, so you have to also look at it in the context of when the movie was made. Making fun of the play in a game that has evolved tremendously in recent years is like criticizing cavemen for not using rifles when hunting their food.

blinds 25/50? I open raise 20x the bb to 1k.

I put you on a flush draw and I think you whiffed. Well, I'll value pwn myself by pushing all in in position on the river.

And others....
he is representing AA, the only hand that beats my KK..........

and op - ime pretty much every subgroup of society finds massive flaws in movies made about their stuff. i think poker is actually pretty lucky that we have at least 2 good films in amongst the silliness (cincinnati, rounders)

Casino Royale would've redeemed itself had it turned out that the dealer was a skilled card mechanic on the take for both Bond and the villain, because in the span of one day Bond ran AK into JJ on a AAJJK board, and we all know what happened on the last hand.

in The Office there's a poker scene where Michael, first to act, shoves preflop. But he's in the small blind. and the dealer just awards Toby the pot without dealing the community cards after Michael walks away.
