Do online poker players have any good social skills? Do online poker players have any good social skills?

Not making fun of them. Dont know why you need to make assumptions like that I just wanted to know why most of these ONLINE players seem to be like this.

I just saw a parallel that people who play lot of XBox , online poker don't speak very well. I dont believe ppl are born like that. It has to do with their lifestyle. Most of my friends who go out a lot act very normal but some of my old friends who still play video games acts very awkward. I havent talked to them for a long time but i heard that they are always at home playing xbox or wii....

People who are shy were born shy. It's just something you're born with. It's in your genes.... kinda how a black person is born black and a white person is born white.

you making fun of them is basically the same as being racist.
I'm sure there's a great deal of evidence to back this up.... That a persons eventual social demeanor is a genetically dictated trait.

There may be some cause/effect issues here.

I doubt poker or the video games cause the lack of social skills; rather, the lack of social skills are caused by other things and people who lack social skills are often drawn to things like video games, etc.

(and for the mouth-breathers here, I'm not saying that people who play video games lack social skills, but I am saying that video games are the sort of things that someone otherwise lacking in social skills might be drawn to)

okay heyyo i understand what you're saying now. yes i think there's a correlation. for instance last summer i went out hardly any and just sat inside and played online poker all day. when i went back to college i felt very awkward and out of place at the parties at first. but after being around peers for a few weeks and being socially integrated into "people" i was able to regain being less awkward at the parties and had a lot of fun.

For instance, much of my mates who work and are pretty social, they always have fun every week like going to the beach. They DONT PLAY ANY VIDEO GAMES. But some other mates i have which i rarely talk to are always at home. Their hobbies? Yep its xbox, ps3 and wii. Thats what they are drawn into which i agree with watchmaker b/c some ppl will most likely be drawn into those things.

i think some online players are just feeling uncomfortable playing live because they are not used to it thus their awkward behaviour. also someone who can play like 8 tables for 8 hours a day is usually not someone who desperately wants to talk.

lol. considering the fact that one of the first questions that comes to your mind when seeing a 21 year old guy giving an interview, is, 'is that guy gay?' perhaps you should ask yourself the same question.

No but they have other great skills. Like nonchuck skills, bow hunting skills, computer hacking skills. Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills.

By social skills do you mean chatrooms or facebook? Please clarify

Personally I just think it is a bit overwhelming for some net players to make the leap into the big live games, such as HSP as mentioned before. You have the online pro's game, which is primarily backed up by a very strong sense of the cards, what peoples betting patterns mean ect, and you have the live pro's, whose games involve a lot more direct 'feeling each other out', as well as a lot of general experience of being in that situation, and knowing what to say, and importantly, what NOT to say.

An online pro just doesn't know what he might say which could end up resulting in a solid read when they have Brunson on one side and Neagranu on the other. I know I would keep my damn mouth shut!

I agree it's definitely unfair to criticize the 'outsider' online pros on HSP. The regs in that game play with each other day in day out and actually know each other personally and have inside jokes and some level of comfort with each other. Being an outsider in that group it's super tough to fit in and be perfectly natural right away. Could you imagine Doyle playing in a game with 8 online whiz kids? He wouldn't fit in either.

the world of warcraft episode of south park sums up what most online players look/act like.

I lol'd once when I read that, and a second time when I quoted it to use in this post.

i was the class clown in high school and a popular dude but since hs i got more and more into poker every year. The more success i have with poker the less time i spend on other things (tv,music, fashion, sports, funny stories) so this gives me less material to talk about. I dont plan to spend the rest of my life playing poker but for the next few years i'm gonna give it all i got. As far as casino poker talk at the table i dont know any of you people ill probably never see you again and im only here to take your money. For the losing player it's more of a "going out and doing something" so of course there gonna talk it up.

the <23 year old nosebleed guys are social rejects imo. I do not blame them, most of them never worked in a restaurant, played high level competative sports, and other things that make the rest of us grow up. and i DO NOT blame them. When you are making 10K a week in grade 12 why would you do anything else? I completely agree with this thread. Just watch Durrr's interviews on youtube. The other thing is that alot of the nosebleed guys are trust fund babys, and have always thought they are just better then everyone since they were 5.

This is such a ridiculously common fallacy. To my knowledge not a single winning high limit player fits this description.

They made their money from poker, sorry to take away your excuse.

this makes no sense.

I thought . . . and STILL think the same thing. He's gay. REALLY gay.

No, I don't think every 21 yr. old giving an interview is gay. (just this one)

No, I don't have anything against gay people.

No, I don't have anything against him specifically. Great poker player.

But I'm sick and tired of everyone trying to defend him, "OMG!!! Don't call my hero gay!!! You'll hurt his feelings!! waaaaaa"

He's a flaming homosexual. Everyone should just admit it, accept it, and move on. Get outta denial.

Good DAY.

I don't know if this is true. It is certainly not unversal.

I was as shy as they come for my entire early life. Then I started college and I made a decision to be more outgoing. Now, I am very comfortable in any sort of social situation. I even chose a career as an event planner where the ability to communicate comfortably with everyone from minimum wage building maintenance workers to famous billionaires is essential.

Social skills can definitely be learned and improved upon.

re: Durrr, I have never watched him give an interview, but I thought his demeaner during the Poker After Dark cash game was very good.
