Sorry to hear about that, i´m sure this guy wont enjoy the rest of his life and hopefully there is some money to be rescued.. BUT its exactly this kind of ignorance that opens up these kind of opportunities for others. As someone else said - this is your business and you need to protect it in a professional way.. and that means more than making your ranges bulletproof...

It doesn't matter what they've done if you simply reformat the drive and set it up from scratch. And if you don't know how to do this, you really have no business playing high stakes poker online.

LOL, true, but knowing how to reformat the drive on a new computer that might have become infected is really the most basic sort of tech awareness. If you can't do that, you likely can't even begin to understand the dangers online and how to protect yourself.

Elsewhere someone was saying online HS players should hire someone to keep them secure, I suppose that's an option, but then you have to trust them, and nothing is really secure now, even banks and the largest corporations are routinely breached, and they have state-of-the-art protection.

I think I'll stick to brick and mortar poker.

Nobody said they were, but what's truly mind-boggling about this story is that HS online players would buy laptops from the Danish poker pro who was apparently crushing the games. Like someone said, this has the makings of a good movie plot.

it's a lot riskier when you're buying second hand because they could just install a hardware keylogger that would require someone with a good understanding of computers to even discover it (if it's non-public).

What a nightmare, and we're still in the infancy of computing. It's going to get very dicy.

On a related note, they're installing USB ports at all the tables in quite a few brick and mortar rooms now, ostensibly so that people don't have to get up from the table to recharge; well, the same USB ports can also be used to transfer data... I'm just sayin'

What? If you're not handy with computers means you have no business in highstakes poker? A bit weird statement dont you think? :P You can always pay an expert to do these, or simply dont buy used computers. I dont know why one would.

Victim blaming is pointless right now so lets not do that. We can only hope HS players, and actually everyone involved in poker pretty much regardless of stakes, takes security super serious from this point forward.

Scary to imagine what might have happened to Jeans had the perpetrators managed to plant their trojans unnoticed.

Yeah, don't ever use any public USB ports. Ever.

there's been quite a few warnings by major news outlets that mobile charging stations can be used for data theft. this is why you should use a cable that only transfers power if the computer is not your own.

Interesting if its possible to see where the trail of money is going --> is the money dumped into other known accounts before cashouts for example?

I guess if they know what accounts are into this, they can get help from HSDB and PTR.

If your BIOS itself is flashed with a virus/corrupt, a reformat won't clean the PC.

It actually sounds like a pretty bad movie.

Nobody would find it believable that people who make millions from poker are THAT stupid when it comes to keeping their accounts safe. It´s obviously a horrible intrusion of privacy if you get attacked by your friend using USB sticks to upload trojans, but serious wow at buying "cheap laptops".

^ presumably though he sold laptops both with and without trojans to balance his range. If your friend has bought one and it seems ok, maybe you would be more careless when you buy yours.

Anyone know if this is related to the well-known Norwegian pro who is said to have lost his roll to someone who could see his cards?

why not buy unusually cheap laptops and resell them with profit.
or format them before using is this too much levelling?

I´m assuming you´re talking about Johnny Lodden? I read a story about him being approached regarding a possible sponsorship deal. He handed out his personal e-mail adress and promptly received an e-mail that contained a trojan. This is obviously just a rumour and I can´t remember where I read it (Huge Lodden fanboy since I once saw him sit with $1m or so on two tables in 2006).
