I guess this was what you were referring to when it comes to the "change the rules" comment. I imagine the late registration was always meant to be at the end of level 12. A few things that point to this being a simple mistake:
1) Pretty much all the WSOPE tournies have late registration ending at Level 12;
2) The 25k Short Deck event (pretty much same structure as the 2.5k Short Deck) had late reg ending at Level 12, and;
3) If tourney officials literally changed the late reg once DNegs busted in Level 10, Deeb would've already cried "bloody murder" on Twitter.
But sure; I guess they are always rigging POY for DNegs, which explains why he hasn't won POY since 2013 (and 2004 before that). And perhaps we are also all being controlled by reptillians in the matrix on this flat planet called Earth

Honestly the DNegs push for POY seems to be an attempt of becoming WSOP.com's first "Sponsored Pro". It would make sense to have him be a rep for the site. Not because he is great but because he has marketing value and can draw in the casual fan still. "Come play with three time POY Daniel Negreanu this Sunday only on WSOP.com". Then DNegs gets all the WSOP camera time.

The above makes pretty good sense. Can't think of another brand out of touch enough to possibly consider paying this clown to represent them.

LOL! Sorry mate; but where exactly does WSOP rank in terms of global poker traffic? I'm guessing outside of the top 10. Now; maybe you're correct: WSOP wants to sign DNegs. Why the hell would DNegs want to sign with (and I'm being generous here) the #10 poker site in the world? Think about it for a minute: would a Lebron James sign with the #10 sneaker maker - probably not: that would conceivably hurt Lebron's personal brand more than the pay cheque the #10 sneaker brand is willing to give Lebron. The only way to convince a sport's #1 most popular player (and unfortunately DNegs is still probably the most recognizable/mainstream popular poker player) to sign with an upstart company would be to structure a deal with a boatload of equity. Unfortunately for poker; there is not enough upside for an online poker site to give equity to anyone.

I can't stand Daniel, but besides Phil Helmuth he's the best asset for bringing in casual players--they love him.

I have to disagree a bit with jal, who's generally spot on. If online in America is a possibility, I could definitely see Daniel making some deal with the 10th ranked site that would include equity, and it would be worth it for both parties. This strategy is pretty common, look at Legal zoom and the honest company--I think the same guy is behind both, and he brought in Alba and Shapiro. Marketing/advertising is so valuable and Dnegs would bring in the suckers, which would bring in everyone else. Even if the US isn't gonna happen, non-business people love pretending they are, and would do it just for the prestige they think it carries

Also would take a lot of the salt out from being dropped by Stars. So that makes some sense this one time.

I’m not certain, but based on the online point calculator, it looks like Deeb would need to finish in 9th place to overtake him, and Campbell would need to finish in the top 40 or so.

There is one last event after the Main, and don't discount Day 1b chip leader Kahle Burns whose on a massive heater having won 2 bracelets in the past week. He's currently in 6th place for POY, needs to win the Main to take the lead, and not have any of the top 5 finish too high.
