I used to play with the guy who basically invented spam. He sent so many spam faxes that the US government had to make it illegal. He then moved on to email, spyware, ransomware, spamming social media sites, and who knows what else. Messing with Facebook got him send to jail for a couple of years. I didn't know any of this until after he stopped showing up.

Met another guy who worked in land reclamation. Basically they dredge up a bunch of sand and create new land at the edge of a body of water. He travels the world and gets paid a ton of money because there's very few experts to go around.

Not poker but I had a roommate who used to be a dolphin watcher. News stories about dolphins getting caught in tuna nets started coming out and tuna companies wanted to advertise their product as "dolphin safe". He was the guy who hung out on fishing boats making sure they didn't kill any dolphins. Before that he worked at a zoo and one of his jobs was wrangling alligators. He would jump on them from behind and duck tape their mouths shut when they needed to be moved or treated.

Seems like only the small stakes, like 2/5 maybe 5/10, that your standard broke poker player had a feeling of superiority over the more distinguished or educated types. It’s almost like the lack of self-reflection correlated to a life of mediocrity.
