well, it's the nature of the market ... there's not enough room for too many competitors. William Hill tried to buy 888 in February, so it will be interesting, if they try to take over another company

With all of the 2nd amendment folks saying the gay marriage ruling opens the door for people to be able to carry weapons in all states (?), wouldn't this also mean people who live in any state should be able to play poker on sites like 888 in New Jersey?

From the little I've seen (UK resident), the people making the 2nd amendment argument are bat**** insane, so I wouldn't worry about it.

For whatever reason, I have never lost a sports bet that I found myself making on 888 (after shopping around for odds). Also never had a problem getting paid. Consolidation in this industry can probably help poker players as it gives Stars a competitor that it has to take seriously and hurt sportsbook gamblers as it reduces the line alternatives.

Minor updates on this story:

GVC considering submitting an improved offer for bwin.party (EGR, $)

Quote:
GVC Holdings looks set to table an improved offer to acquire bwin.party in a bid to trump 888, which on Friday revealed it had agreed an £898m deal to buy the beleaguered operator.
We also have something brief up on OPR about the various potential outcomes from a 888 / party merger for the regulated NJ online poker market.

Does anyone know if a bwin.party/888 merge will allow Belgian players to play on 888? Might finally be worth it to add a site

The 888 merge may not happen, the deal might go to GVC. This game has not yet seen the river, dealmaking is still taking place. 888's announcement was premature, remember that BWIN made the same announcement for GVC winning the deal the week prior. We must all wait this out to see who wins in the end.

Regardless, keep in mind that the poker assets were not 888's priority. They care about the casino and sports books business from BWIN - the poker assets are just coming along for the ride in that specific deal.

The interesting thing about GVC winning it (if they succeed) is that they seem more likely to dispose of the Poker part of the business than 888 would have been, so PartyPoker could again be on the market fairly soon.

i've read a few times*, that the poker operations (at least those active in the usa) will go to amaya if gvc gets bwin.party

* i think i've read it in two independent articles, other sources prolly just picked it up

The conventional wisdom is that the US poker assets will 100% end up with AYA in case of GVC purchase. It's a little foggier how ROW might go but simplest explanation is that it will also go with AYA.

Latest update: GVC "not prepared to walk away" as 888 ups offer.

GVC implies a hostile approach could follow if they don't win the asset via the current route.

if that were to happen would party stay seperate but owned by them? would it disappear and be consumed by stars? or would it be like ftp where seperate but linked through accounts?

I don't want an Amaya monopoly, but I do want new ownership at Party Poker. The current ownership has mismanaged the site so badly.

Unless I'm missing something with GVC, Amaya is no longer included in their bid for Bwin.

From an August 7th press release on TD Web Broker by Thomson Reuters (emphasis mine):
Quote:
GVC said it would finance the new deal through a combination of new GVC shares and a 400 million-euro ($443 million) senior secured loan from private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, removing Amaya's involvement and some of the complexity that had worried Bwin.
From a further press release on August 27th (Thomson Reuters, also viewed on Web Broker), when talking about a new bid GVC is preparing to submit:
Quote:
GVC has since dropped Amaya and now has backing from U.S. private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management.
Unless Amaya has some sort of relationship with either GVC or Cerberus that I'm unaware of, they are no longer involved in the bid.

they're not longer "involved in the bid" and officially not at the table because (as i understood) the triangle deal was too complicated/risky. besides that, like it was mentioned a few times itt, rumour has it, that Amaya will still get something if GVC lands the deal ... so i wouldn't surprised if party will be sold to amaya (the poker operations are the less valuable in the whole package imo)

bwin just sent an email about the newest press release: "The Board of bwin.party has announced it is recommending to shareholders an offer to acquire the company from GVC Holdings."

Price is approx. £1.116 billion (25 pence cash and 0,231 GVC shares per bwin.party share)

the press release sounds basically like the one about 888: "pleased to announce ... reached agreement ... GVC will acquire the entire issued and to be issued ordinary share capital ..."

let's see, if this deal will go through ^^

Remember when PartyGaming first went public on the LSE? Within a month, its stock was valued at $12 billion. 2005 seems a very long time ago now. :/
This sale, if/when it goes ahead, presumably ends the most epic downsw0ng in online poker history.

Pretty soon the UK is going to have about 8 books left. With mergers and takeovers happening all over the shop it's going to mean a bad slate of books getting worse. And on the poker did I still don't see anyone able to compete withStars.
