Or this could mean simply that he likes playing where he knows he'll get recognized and might be more likely to win. I seem to recall reports dating a while back, when he would not have been busto, that he's been known to play lower limit tables.

I think that's a lot smarter than playing 100/200 with much, much better players. Why does the guy have to play high stakes just because he won a tournament?

millionaires dont ask for 5k stakes

first off he wasn't a millionaire before the series, far from it. huge misconception - as he was constantly borrowing from players at the commerce after busting before his win. during the series, through the preliminary events, he was running around looking for someone to stake him when bodog agreed (and we know the rest of that story). for the record, millionaires don't do that.

it was only after the win he started playing in the 500k hollywood, hsp/big venetian cash games. he was a 2/5 (sometimes 5/10) player before that. between spending like a drunken sailor and playing highstakes it's no wonder his roll is 5% what it was. it doesn't take many 250k bust sessions to bust when your roll is 5MM. he's never stepped into bobby's room.

99% of VNG would be in the same situation if we played those stakes against the best NLHE players in the world. personally i am looking forward to a *poker player* winning the main event one day. i'm not sure about eastgate but gold/yang/moneymaker (and prob hachem) don't know how to play other games - literally know less about HORSE games than my 87 yr old grandmother. gold wouldn't attempt to play in a not-hold'em tourney. the appeal of a NLHE "specialist" has gotten tired imo - it's 2004 donkstyle.

You know how rich people are rich because they are tight with money? Bodog sponsored him half (presumably because he didn't want to burn $10k thinking he wouldn't do very well being a n00b), so he fulfilled his obligation with them by promoting them. It's not rocket science.

We've had this argument before on NVG about people selling pieces even though they can afford the buyin - Eastgate played 200/400 before his WSOP win, yet he sold half to reduce variance. Or do you have a smart response for that too?
