The WSOP has a 10 game event this year and it includes BADUGI. Little weird to me as badugi isn't really a poker game. They also don't have a straight up badugi event. Was it only approved by the NGC as part of the mix?
Why don't they just make it a 5 card game with a low kicker? Would still be fun and would be pokerz...
I think they should've just made the 10th game 5 card draw.

If they can have a chinese poker event, they can put badugi in a mix.

Badugi is more popular than 5 card draw and is played in a lot of poker rooms. If they're only going to have one, badugi is the better choice.

I dunno, badugi has all the elements of poker other than having different hand rankings. I don't see why you think badugi isn't poker.

Because it's not a 5 card game?

Care to elaborate on the rules?

Thanks for trying that would have been awesome.

OP,

Badugi has all the qualities of a legitimate poker game. That you don't make a five-card hand is not important.

Where is poker defined as a 5 card game?

Baducey is a five card triple draw slit pot game where the best five card 2-7 hand wins half the pot, and the best badugi (using any combination of your five cards) wins the other half of the pot.

If you are playing in the US it is common for the badugi rules to be changed slightly so that an Ace plays high for the badugi half as well as high for the 2-7 half. So with these rules if you hold 2c-3d-4h-5s-7d you have nut/nut.

In Knights Bridge Baducey, the badugi hand rankings are unmodified, so an Ace plays low for the badugi half of the pot, and high for the 2-7 half. So, it is impossible to have nut/nut in Knights Bridge.

Why do you say Badugi isn't a poker game?

Thank god they are adding more draw games.

Daniel can weigh in, but it looks like the WSOP will add even more in 2012.

Yeah, but they don't show it on tv and we don't get to see our poker heroes play it. Therefore, it must not be real.

Is it classified as a poker game by the NGC though? I recall seeing footage of Greg Raymer playing a live cash game at the WSOP and they asked what he was playing and he sort of rolled his eyes a bit and said something like "um, it's er.. 4 card triple draw, lets just call it that" and then there were a few giggles.

Seems like a poker game to me though, albeit a dreadful one with a frustration level possibly exceeding even razz. Badeucey sounds like a great game (never played it).

Is badacey like baducy but with A-5 rankings and razzdugi like razz for half the pot and the other half to the best badugi?

I don't think the auto correct function in my phone has ever had so much trouble with one post btw!

I don't think it's poker because it has different hand rankings.

TX, Syntax! Sounds like fun.
Sorry, I was under the impression that NV, CA, CT, NJ, etc. had trouble licensing/spreading the game for the exact reason that it wasn't a 5 card game. I guess I was wrong?
I mean, is there another poker game that doesn't require 5 cards at showdown? (you consider Chinese poker, poker?) I don't...

Badugi is allowed as a cash game in Vegas. I've played it at Wynn, seen it spread as part of mixes at Bellagio and Rio during the WSOP. So I don't think it's an issue there. It's also allowed in Delaware Park at least on the East Coast (not AC yet).
