Old Man Gunderblatt was talking about minimum payments and APRs, but I didn't pay attention to any of that. I just stared at that card all shiny and gold with a black stripe that made me think of the future and the many wonderful things to come.

It was a few years before any stores nearby accepted credit cards, and even Ma got one by Aught-Three, but I'll never forget that first credit card.

Per Wikipedia:

"Dating to shortly after the founding of Henderson County in 1838, Hendersonville is traditionally known as "The City of Four Seasons.", but since 1940s, some residents call it "Hooterville". The town has a well-preserved Main Street and adjoining downtown areas with many restaurants, antique shops and boutiques in buildings that housed key local business until the mid-1980s...

The largest street festival of the Hendersonville calendar is the annual North Carolina Apple Festival, culminating in the Apple Parade that regularly draws up to 50,000 spectators...

Clothing retailer Bon Worth was founded in Hendersonville in 1976...

Notable residents:

Doug Llewelyn (born 1938), original host of "The People's Court"
William Dathan Holbert, serial killer, born in Hendersonville"

Now, the funny thing is, if you had gathered round everybody back in '76 and put it to a vote, asked who was more likely to end up a serial killer, Doug Llewelyn or ol' Willie D. Holbert, I betcha all the apples in the county that Doug woulda won that vote in a landslide. Just goes to show you never know, I guess.

I got my first credit card in 1979, but they were long common at that point.

My dad had credit cards from around that time and they were made of embossed metal rather than plastic.

Plastic wasn't discovered until later. it was credit cards, then plastic.

PW = Johnny Hughes? sneaking back onto 2+2, using a disguise of misspelt words, and poor grammar.

Synopsis

Here is a synopsis of the early part of my new novel,A TEXAS BEAUTY, SMART and STRONG. Misty Morgan, a former Miss Amarillo, had learned that her great beauty was an advantage in most of life but could be a disadvantage, even a threat. When she first began to have success is medium-size poker tournaments in Las Vegas, Tom Chapman was always there as a cheerleader and confidence builder. He told her, falsely, that he was a psychologist and poker coach to some big-name poker players. They had dinner often on the break in poker tournaments. After weeks, Misty was taking a nap in Tom's room at the Plaza when she was awakened by Tom's erect penis in her back. She fled the room and Tom became a stalker. Here is an excerpt from the novel.
Maybe PW is Misty out for revenge

Wow, checked out Johnny's site after you posted this. That Brandy Hawbacker-based book sounds utterly ridiculous and horrible.

My whole thing is that if you dont say anything that lets them long-con/borrow etc from others who probably wouldn't be doing it if they knew the risk (debt)associated with that person. Not saying anything is dumb bc it lets them continue to fly under the radar.
There's a Facebook page Poker Scammers of the World, where we are invited to post pics and story of aforementioned scam artists. The villains apparently can get their Bio taken down once they have paid. Finally their is somewhere where one can vent if one has been wroughted.Worth a look.

A lot of the players they used to "feature" are dead broke at best, and that doesn't even take into account their character or poker skill.

They're ignorant as far as poker is concerned so it's not surprising.
A lot of these players either

1)were total frauds
2)ran like god in a few tournies around the time poker was becoming popular and got lots of tv time and endorsments because of it
3)may have been decent back then but the game has long since passed them by.

I mean how many of those ESPN "good" players from 10 years ago are still beating the games today without endorsement deals? Not to mention there were always guys like Gabe Thaler who just grinded away at cash games successfully back then, still does now and never got any attention since he wasn't binking tv events. Not that he's an amazing player or anything but there are guys like him who are just solid players making money in cash games for years on who will never be well known.

Don't believe everything you see on tv- especially when people have reason to lie and promote themselves.
If you play in poker rooms long enough you'll see a lot of these ESPN "poker stars"-almost always in very low stakes games, often short stacking as well and who knows if they're even winning or on their own dime.

As far as what Men plays- the times I've since this scumbag at the borgata he's playing 2/5 plo and shortstacking (200-300 in a game with a 1 k max buy in) and I saw him a few times at the tables near mine in what was either 1/2 or 2/5 nl.He would get destroyed in higher cash games.

He did to my understanding play some events at the recent borgata tourny series- most likely backed by people who don't know any better.
gabe thaler plays 2-5 and 1-3 at the wynn now. the game has passed him by because hes the worlds biggest nit

I never said he was great, I said he grinds away and beats them games unlike a lot of TV ****s people think are good.

And if he's smart enough to play a deep stacked 2/5 game over a ****ty 5/10 game sometimes and the bigger games when they're good then good for him.Beats the hell out of scamming cheating and having backers.

I read the Kindle sample chapter and if that's any guide, it's not as good as you're suggesting here.

Also, no way PW is Johnny Hughes. Hughes never had any gossip dated later than 1978 at the very latest.

This stuff is pure gold. Love the 'for sale on all Amazons'.

My new novel, A TEXAS BEAUTY: SMART and STRONG will be available for sale in two months on all Amazons and by bookstore order. Writing modern fiction gives one a lot of space to explore many themes.

My novel is a mystery, romance, and comedy. The main character, Misty Morgan, has a stalker which reveals himself on page one. There are six.six million stalker victims in America each year. Sixty percent of them are male. Stalkers disrupt lives. Misty flees Las Vegas and her stalker for her beloved West Texas, Lubbock and Amarillo. But will Misty's stalker follow her? Yes!

I see that suspense isn't one of Johnny Hughes' themes.
