Hard to say... is their rate higher than other states in terms of similar incidents?

Then again, even if it's lower, this doesn't stop legislators from using it as an excuse. And hell, we all know people who are afraid to travel by train or by plane and instead opt to drive, even though they are many times more likely to die in a car crash.

Best wishes to that security guard, too. He was in a horrible position, going one against four like that.

According to the article, the robbery happened at around 6am. Who is even awake to do something like that? Not the first thing I think about when I wake up at crack of dawn.

Security guard shot 7 times deemed a hero after ‘gun battle’ with armed robbers at north Harris County poker room

A security guard was shot while trying to stop an attempted robbery at a poker room in north Harris County Thursday morning, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said.
Deputies responded to the Texas Card House poker room in the 1400 block of Spring Cypress Road shortly after 6 a.m.The Evidence Room, Episode 22 -- The Serial Killings of Acres Homes
2 charged with kidnapping after 18-year-old woman tied up inside N. Harris County home for 1 month, sexually assaulted - 2023-07-17
Sheriff Gonzalez said several suspects attempted to rob the poker room. The security guard, who was on-site, got involved and attempted to stop the robbery.
That was when, according to Gonzalez, a “gun battle” ensued between the suspects, with “dozens of shots fired.” The security guard was hit by the gunfire.
Gonzalez said the suspects fled the scene before HCSO deputies arrived.
No customers were hurt.
KPRC 2 spoke with a card dealer named Andrew. He asked not to show his face. He said he just made his way inside Texas Card Club, seconds before shots were fired.
“I walk back in, 40 seconds later, pop, pop, pop,” said Andrew. All I saw was bullets coming through the window.”
Harris County sheriff’s deputies said a security officer got in a gun battle with four men attempting to rob the poker room. The officer, known as Officer Jackson, was hit seven times.
“They attacked him from the back. He fired his weapon as they fired upon him and he was hit seven times,” said Tommy Wilson, Officer Jackson’s boss and CEO of God’s Armour Security.
“Our security officer (Officer Jackson) came stumbling back in the door and told us that they had left and that the threat was over,” said Andrew.
Andrew said witnesses rushed to help Officer Jackson. The suspects got away, leaving behind a gun on the ground. Officer Jackson is alive and is recovering in the hospital.
“I’ve been with him all morning. He has good spirits. All of the bullets exited his body expect one and we’re waiting to see now if he has to have foot surgery,” said Wilson.
Andrew believes Officer Jackson is the reason everyone is alive.
“There are no words. Thank you. For what you did. You truly, you put your life on the line for us and you didn’t have to. Who does that?” said Andrew.
The sheriffs office said it has surveillance video from the shooting. They have not released it at this time. Deputies have not released a description of the suspects, but if you have any information you are urged to contact the Harris County Sheriffs Office. (713) 221-6000

I’m just going to say this after a 20 year career in law enforcement. That Security Guard was probably being paid about $13-15 an hour to encounter an armed robber AND end up being shot for his life in the balance. I don’t know for sure, but he is probably supporting a wife and children. *IF* there are Poker Players here THAT can afford to help in his recovery, I’m begging you for your help. I don’t know him from Adam, but I do know what they go through on a day-to-day basis. Instead of making fun of him, help out.

In fairness, Houston is known for its high crime rate and it isn’t fair to paint the whole state with the same brush. Much like Chicago doesn’t represent all of Illinois or NYC doesn’t represent all of New York.

NYC ranks as consistently one of the safest large cities in the world. Rate stats are more insightful than bulk stats.

I often think about this when it comes to the LA-area casinos. Not the greatest locations in the world, which is probably why they're there in the first place.

“Officer Jackson” from Gods Armour security sounds like the name of a black man and working for a significantly black security company to me, but who knows. I do hope there is a fundraiser the expectation that an armed guard is to fight to the death to protect a shady operation single-handedly when it inevitably gets robbed is pretty Wild West at best and why people are talking about it honestly it’s crazy. these card rooms are basically casinos/banks with a one man fight to the death security operation in place to protect what’s probably at least 200k cash on hand minimum and what sounds like easy escape routes on dark Houston streets apparently. Another security guard shouldn’t have to lose their life when the inevitable next jump comes or patron caught in cross fire which is what will be the end of the Texas situation eventually. The owners and operators are to blame if they can’t keep cash on hand minimal with proper management routines and accept a safe robbery procedure like banks do to prevent literal routine death fights. Illegal Dispensaries in LA also used to get violently robbed and people shot over 50k out the door at there heyday but the operations went smaller over time and more reasonable cash and just weed on hand and just good video security in those places and an attitude of just let the robberies safely occur and life went on for all involved with few shootings in the news. Too much money sitting in these games large buyin games need to be for credit players only and less cash on premises is the best practical move

“Safest large cities” means safe(ish) relative to other large cities. Still not nearly as safe as smaller towns, suburbs, or rural areas of New York.

What does the race of the security guard or the race of the owners of the security company have to do with anything? What a bizarre comment.

I would be so mad if a wannabe security guard hero started a shootout with customers all around, instead of handing the money.
Why would anyone even draw his gun there??
Just handle the money wtf!

How the **** does "Officer Jackson" sound black? What's wrong with you people?

Texas is the wild west. Stand your ground law means who ever lives is innocent. The card rooms operate in a legal grey area in a city with new development in uninsurable flood zones .... in a corporate captured state that has it's own power grid and has tried to secede.

I dont know why the poster found his race relevant, but heuristically Id agree "Officer Jackson" is likely to be black.
